Had the oil changed in my truck last week at the dealer since I had a cupon. I noticed today on the sheet, it says they used regular Rotella. To get the 15k miles between changes, should they be using synthetic like the factory fill?
If so, is there any documentation I can use to show them so I know it's correct next time?

In your owners manual there is no specific requirement for dyno or synthetic oil (that I could find) this oil change mileage is not really that long. Then new engines (13 and 14s) are putting much less soot and waste combustion products in the crankcase, so our service parameters have changed

Meant to say that. I couldn't find a requirement in the manual either. I know I saw people writing about the synthetic fill from the factory. Just wasn't sure if it needed to continue.
Anyone have a clue what they fill with at the factory. Seems like I remember someone saying it was Delo 400 Synthetic.

I'm pretty sure its Valvoline Premium Blue Extreme which is a full synthetic. Many opinions on which is best, but that's what I've used since it came out. Ken Irwin

Did you make it to 15K without the oil change indicator saying to change it? Are you going to have a oil sample checked to see how it did? I bought a oil sample kit (10 test kits)from a place here in Phoenix that I really dont like. Blackstone labs gave a much better report then the place I'm using. I plan on going back to them soon.

The syn factory fill allows the truck to have an oil that will be good for the cold temp areas as well as anywhere else.Syn is not needed to get to the high miles we are used to seeing on the well cared for Cummins

The only time Cummins specifies a synthetic is when you'll see temps below 0 degrees F. Then they recommend a 5w-40 (Thanks to GS Brockman for the correction) which is only made with synthetic base stock. Otherwise, good ol dino oil that meets CES20081 will meet the 15k change interval and I believe regular Rotella has that certification Shell Rotella linkl.

Fixed it for ya!!!

You might read John Martin's article in TDR76, p. 52. He likes Shell Rotella and Castrol Tection. Cummins told us during the June 2013 plant rally that they use Valvoline synthetic only because they don't know where the engine/truck will end up being sold or when--it gets cold in the winter in Canada.
