cummins 5.0

Who knows Last week my kid brother went to the rv show in tampa. He saw the new 5.0 by cummins and was talking to a rep , he told him cummins could not come to an agreement with dodge so they are going to put it into the nisson pkp And did not know about the future of cummins in the full size dodge. Any on have info ? It don't sound right to me.

RAM will continue with the 6.7. The 5.0 was originally developed for RAM, but Fiat now owns them and they are now FCA. So they are sourcing their in-house VM Motori Diesel for half-tons, with the rationale that people who want more power will just buy a 2500. People who want economy can get the half ton.

Sounds like the ol Ford owns Cummins story, in 04 a Ford salesman told be the next year the Cummins contract with Dodge will end the production of the CTD for Dodge, because Ford wouldn't approve it. :-laf:-laf:-laf

I applaud Cummins in doing this. I can't believe Nissan is doing it though, as their own small diesels are very good and would be easy to apply from an engineering standpoint. I'm sure it has to do with emissions. Cummins has the leg work done with the EPA so why not use a world renowned diesel engine manufacturer in the USA.

I'll be patiently waiting to see what happens.

I thought I read that there was a coup of engineers etc. from Ram and they went to Nissan. Also, Fiat's track record is similar to most euro companies (like Daimler) where they want it all under one roof. I mentioned in another thread what happened to Case/ New Holland/ Case IH when Fiat took them. find post 40 in this link.

Keep in mind the Cummins ISV 5.0 WAS slated for the 1500 Ram around 2005, but the fiscal disaster of '08 stopped that, so Cummins was left holding the bag. Since then Fiat took over Chrysler and the ISV is OUT. The VM V6 is in. Fiat owns VM Motori. Pretty obvious to me

Could be. Were it not for the presence of Fred Diaz, the Titan line would become less significant in the market than it already is. His departure was a loss for RAM IMO.

Right now Nissan is sporting a concept truck (Frontier) with a 2.8l 4cylinder with 200/350 cummins motor. They are waiting to see the response to see if it's viable for production.

I emailed Nissan and they replied back with a survey about the diesel Frontier. Basically they are trying to figure out what type of usage the majority of users will be putting it through and what market expectations are with regards to cost, mileage, durability etc. And I'm fairly certian old Freddy boy knows exactly what Cummins can do for the Nissan lineup. I know I wouldn't buy one without it!

DFitz, I actually would buy a Frontier without the Cummins...It is a very nice smaller sized truck, my Son owns a 2012 PRO 4X 6sp, and I have been building several online.

If available, I would probably choose the Cummins option for myself, however this is going to end up my Wife's vehicle and not sure the extra cost of purchasing, maintaining and preventive measures that a diesel requires would be the best fit for her style of usage.

Our family has owned a couple of older Datsun/Nissan/Frontiers, along with several Toyota Tacomas, In my experience of ownership, the "value scales" definitely weigh towards the Nissans, because of the initial cost being less than the Toyotas. Not trying to start a Nissan/Toyota war, as I currently possess a Toyota Tacoma that I am very fond of, this is just how I see it. Jess

it begs the question about Cummins future in the Heavy Duty Ram lineup. Im sure Fiat has something in the hp range that would fit between the rails of a new Ram Heavy Duty. These days companies are all about keeping the money in house when possible. Just sayin;

yep.. that would do it with a few tweaks for some more peak power.
Gonna be hard to use Sam Elliot in the commercials though. His voice saying "The new Fiat diesel" doesnt have a good ring to it!. Of course, Howie Long never says Isuzu!
