I was on Youtube and saw some videos of Ford diesel owners who accidentally put DEF fluid in the main fuel tank. As you can imagine, the entire fuel system was trashed with bills exceeding $9,000 in repairs. Terrible!
A few things came out one video:

The dealer can see it was DEF that caused the fuel system damage because when they take the filter out and let it dry, crystals form that look like salt on the surface.

The DEF made it through the filtration system on the 6.7L trucks which are 2011 and newer which I would imagine are as good as the systems used on the Ram trucks. The sensors, etc all showed crystals or rust on the surface and the dealer denied any warranty claims on the trucks.

The mechanic will open the fuel cap and smell the vapors, it will smell like ammonia if DEF is in the tank.

So with all this said, I still can't imagine why Ram did not put a cap on the fuel tank fill . I know someone will say it is because of room but really, couldn't they put the DEF tank fill somewhere else?
I am sure there will be plenty of owners that either lose or misplace their little fill funnel for the DEF tank and try to pour it gently in the tank trying not to spill it. There will also be the people that buy the larger container to save on money and that just makes spilling or overfilling the DEF just that much more a reality. I think with the new Ram 1500 coming aboard, there will be a lot of owners who have never owned a diesel entering the market purely because of the fuel mileage and fairly low cost penalty for the diesel option. It will be a shame if the Ram name gets tarnished because of errors and accidents caused by DEF getting into the diesel tank.
Just something to think of.....

I believe the 2014's got a fuel fill cap. Seems they should recall the 2013's and install the cap! There is a guy here in the NW that invented a closed system the recycles the "stuff", ammonia I believe. He took me on his yacht that he was testing with one engine with it and one without it. He had all kinds of good claims. Chris

Check out Geno's they have one you can purchase, Joe Donnelly can up with a fix and posted it a couple days ago. As stated before, we are an innovative group put your thinking cap on. OH, and blame the Engineers and Bean counters.

I think that with the new trucks with these fill necks so close together, that if someone else fuels your rig (like a Oregon fill station) they might cause a fuel/def fill problem. You'll have to be very observant to avoid a mix-up.

Are the fuel tank and DEF ports the same size?

No, and if you buy DEF in 2.5 gallon containers from Peak, they come with a hose and small nozzle that fits the DEF inlet. I have refilled several times that way with no spillage. I kcut down an ABS 1.5" plumbing cap, and chamferred the top edge for clearance to the fill door. Cost was under $3 and took a little time.

Mine had the little green cap as well when I picked up the truck, but I think that is only mean't to be a temporary shipping cap like the ones they put on hyd. pumps etc. till they are installed. I personally would not go with out the Geno's cap, or some other alternative like Joe's because when I didn't have one on several times when I opened the door there was water in the neck on the flap as well as large grits of sand etc. Just plain retarded if you ask me. Even when washing the truck the pressured water WILL go in there and get in the neck. They could do a much better job of a cap, no excuses, just plain dumb.As for the DEF, I've only had to fill once, but I bought mine from the local Cummins dealer as they were the cheapest and got the large jugs and they have the flexible filler spout and they work just fine, easy for one guy to do and not spill. the size of the jug is just right that if you are just below half on the gauge you can dump the whole jug in without wording about it overfilling.

Did you put a vent hole in it? Chris

The Geno's one is a solid rubber plug and I've been using it for about 6000km's now and it has no vent. The tank has a third little vent tube that comes up under the filler neck assembly that I believe vents the tank enough for the the rule draw of the pumps feeding the engine. This small vent though has me concerned enough that when I plumb my aux tank into the filler neck, I will run a 1/2" hose back up to my aux tank so that it can vent enough volume while transferring fuel with the Geno's plug in the filler neck and not inflate the factory tank.

Yeah, I think it's crazy that there is no cap, I've just been putting duct tape over it for now. I know, it sounds dumb but it works.

The $1.50 fix..

I struggled with ways to lock the filler door, since there is no room for a locking cap inside. I will show you what I did at May Madness.

I think the Chrysler Boys will be hearing about the displeasure with the fill cap problem at MM.

Look forward to seeing what you did.
