Hi guys, been awhile, need help again. Got a new Blue Chip pump in December and its acting up, but they think
its my ECM. So looking for someone with a ECM for a '99 auto to borrow, rent or buy, for trouble shooting.
So if anyone knows of anything like this, or can help me out, it would surely be appreciated.
Thanks

If you like to know the particulars, here we go. Drove fine for the first 4-6 hours, then it missed when I was
about to take off with it. So I thought I look under the hood, and it revved up all by itself and died.
So started right back up and was fine, drove home. Next day drove a couple towns over and picked up a tire
and got a dead pedal, stopped, and it started working again, drove home. So I checked codes , 216 death code
and 382 heater relay control. Blue chip thinks its ECM from the reving up and dieing thing.
Thanks for listening.

I may have a spare ECM that could work, although it's not from a '99.

Do you know if the ECM on your truck is the original unit?

Can you post the information from the ECM data plate... or maybe post a picture of the data plate?

Thanks for the interest! I think that maybe only 98.5 through 2000 and some say less, maybe
someone will chime in and tell us. Anyways, I will try to get what I can off of ECM.

Drove all over tonite and no trouble, not pulling a trailer.:(

Sorry that it took so long, busy, Thanks

This is the best I could get.
Sorry, but what's visible in your photo isn't enough info to go by.

What I have is a spare ECM configured for a 2001 with an auto transmission and Federal emissions. The data label shows:

PN: 3947412
SN: 5007039
DC: 06/28/01
ESN: 56848374
ECM Code: J90831.06

I don't know if that'd work in your application or not. I'd be willing to sell it to you if you want to give it a try. Please PM me if interested and we'll go from there.

Best regards,

John L.

Thanks again I'll try to get more ,other numbers and maybe some one
can tell us on here. Is one of those numbers in particular the one we need other than
the ECM code. I have the ESN number too.
Marc

You can use the Part number, and it should run a generic program that will work.... there are two part numbers that I am aware of in 99 and '98. They will not interchange, and an ECM from 2000+ will NOT work correctly, nor will the '98/99 work on the 2000+.... Look at the label again, should be 3942336, maybe with an "RX" on the end if reman'd. The pic you took above is in the right area, but the number I need is to the left and above that number... that number I can read there is the ECM code, or production date and flash date code.... by that code, which should translate to a J90270.04 That tells me it was manufactured somewhere around June of 1999....

I have two at the moment.... a take off and a brand new Cummins RX part.... if we can verify they are the same part number, 3942336, we might can make something work out for you....

Thanks HHhuntitall
I've finally got all the numbers had my stepson read them.
I'll just list them all so I can refer back too.

ESN 56572835

ECM Code J90270 04

PN 3942336

SN 2127772

DC 03/29/99

UPDATE ( this on white Dodge sticker )

PN 323730305J

DLR CODE 67940

DATE 7/19/99

Well the PN are a match, do any of the other numbers matter?
Will your ECM have the updates or will I have to go to DC to be flashed?
I'm beginning to think its the ECM so will yours be good for replacement.
Thanks

Rest of the numbers matter, but it should work.... the other numbers refer to the exact engine build, that day, that serial number. But I have switched them out before, and they almost all work. Biggest thing to look for when swapping ECMs is the fuel lift pump trigger. It has to be actuated, or eats your injection pump. The two ECMs I have for '98/99 are both that part number. The new in box one has an RX following the part number, and if you bought one from Cummins, that's what it would be, regardless of Engine S/N..... The used one I have has been reflashed, by Cummins Southern Plains in Fort Worth, communicated correctly with their laptop, and shows to be good. It has all the current updates, if any. PM me if you're interested, and we'll work it out.....

Hey if anybody out there can tell me ground locations on the engine of a '99
it would be greatly appreciated.
I found one above the starter but it the wrong color according to manual.
Manual says Black and Tan and I got Black and White.
Looked all over left side of engine.
Any help Thanks

Above the starter, on a bolt through the ECM, holding it to the block? That should be it!! The tan is probably just a deterioration of the color in the wire... it should have a plain, galvanized, round bolt eye on the end of the wire..... Typically, on a '98-99, if it's not grounded, you don't get a drive signal for your lift pump.....

There should also be a big battery ground on the driver side block below the vacuum pump, as well as another large one on the passenger side, just in front of the passenger side motor mount..... It may also have a block to chassis ground on the back of the block from either the block or bellhousing to the cab firewall. It will be the flat, uncoated, galvanized grounding wire, type, probably about 1/2" wide, around 10" long..... Then there are the usually smaller wires off the battery ground to the chassis grounds, and one to the alternator, IIRC.

Hey thanks for the info. Got all but the uncoated and I'll look for it tomorrow.

Drove it 200mi plus with out a hitch, or a trailer.

Thanks again

Still checking truck , taking trip again no trailer .

Couldn't find big ground strap on back of engine but

I think I found them all. Thanks again both of you for

replying and helping me talk this out.

I'll get on here again if it goes haywire.
