Brake Shoes

I have ALKO D70 axles under my KZ toy hauler. I want to replace the brake shoes. Does Dexter have a interchangeable shoe that fits the ALKO?

Trailer brake shoes are pretty universal, with a few exceptions. Most trailer parts stores can match up the shoes if you take one in. You'll likely find that it's nearly as cheap to replace entire backing plate assemblies rather than buying individual shoes and you get new magnets, springs, plates as well as shoes.

X2, Buy the complete unit. The results will be a lot better.

I didn't look up the specs for your axle, but, if it is the 7,000lb axle with 6 lugs, you can update to heavier duty Dexter brakes. Price isn't much different. The heavier brakes have thicker, different compound shoes and bigger magnets. The Dexter catalog or E-trailer.com may show the part numbers. When I replace mine, that is the way I'm going to go.

I'm now retired but used to own a clutch and friction shop... we used to sell the shoes for about 40% of the price of a Dexter dealer... and the shoes came from the same vendor... Dexter no longer manufactures in the US... I'd suggest you try Amazon or Ebay before you went to your Dexter dealer... the shoes go by the width and diameter of the drum... the 2 most common are a 10x2 or the 12x2.... and yes we also sold the completer backing plate... if you have the need for more than just shoes... if any of the hardware is damaged by all means go find the complete backing plate.... it will be less expensive....

When we turned the drums for our customers we'd also surface the area of the drum where the magnet rode... 75% of the time we could machine the drum and salvage it for one more life cycle at least...
