Anyone know if you can program the engine to shutdown after a set time after you leave the vehicle. It would be nice to be able to lock the vehicle and go about your business without waiting for cool down. I heard the dealer can program it, can we?

This is what the owners manual says:

"Idle Shutdown
This feature can be enabled so that the truck will automatically shutdown when the truck has been idling for a set period of time when the engine is at operating temperature. Idle time can be set in 5 minute increments between 5 and 60 minutes. See your local authorized dealer to enable this feature."

Wondering if anyone has had this enabled?

Humm, I may have to look into this as long as it does shorten up the run time on remote start when the engine is cold. The fact that the quoted statement says "when the engine is at operating temperature" leads me to think that this shouldn't effect the remote start since you wouldn't be at operating temp in that case. It would also be nice to lengthen the run time when you use the remote start to start it as well since 15 minutes isn't alway long enough when it's minus 30-40 ish. This otta stump my local dealership when I ask!!!!

The two copies that I've looked at state that this is for the cab and chassis only.:(

The feature was not shaded OUT on My preference Tap, 2013-14 Rams 3500. when I gets some time I will enable the feature, see if functional or not.

On my 2011 if it idles for about 5 minutes with the key in the run position it will shutdown by itself. If I turn the key off it will shut off right away.

I just had this feature activated yesterday at the dealer ship yesterday. So like TC said, it wasn't shaded out, and it does work. Although I think it is kind of dumb how it works though. I had it set for 5 minutes and it does shut the engine off in five minutes, but it leaves the ignition in the on position so the air conditioning fan says going, and everything else as if the truck is running with the engine off!!! So you couldn't just lock the doors and walk away to leave it to shut off in 5 minutes, you'd have to come back and actually turn the ignition to off. Kind of dumb unless I'm missing something. I haven't left it long enough to see if the ignition would just shut down on it's own like the accessory position will when you are just sitting there listening to music or something and it times out on you. If the ignition stays on continuously, I'll probably get the dealer to turn it off, what a joke if that is the case. Also, if you are sitting in a construction lineup or at a rail crossing waiting, you had better hit the brakes once in a while so it doesn't shut down on you. The timer works from the point of the last activity on the brake or throttle. The first time it actually worked for me yesterday, I was sitting at a rail crossing waiting and literally seconds before I was going to put my foot on the brake to shift into gear, the truck shut off!!!! good timing! Has anyone else actually used this on a 2013/14 yet?

Kevin, on your 2011, does the whole truck shut down when yours times out at 5 minutes? In your case you have to leave the key in the ignition don't you?

sounds like more of an emissions forced shutdown that a convenience feature. I jsut shut mine down when I get home. Not going to worry about cooldown unless ive been towing hard.

With water cooled turbos is it really necessary anyway? Normal driving by the time you park the turbo is going to be cooled off. Even pulling into a rest area at the top of a hill with a trailer on, by the time you coast along the off ramp and pull into the spot I bet the turbo is cooled off, and if not is it really that big of a deal to sit an idle for a minute in those rare situations?

The manual says to idle 5 minutes after heavy load. I think it's prudent to do that. If coking occurs, the turbo will fail prematurely and I would imagine, Ram would say it was due to improper cool down.

mpaulson, yes I have to leave the key in, if I take the key out everything shuts down. The auto shutdown just turns the engine off and everything else (fan, radio, etc) are still on.

I just had it disabled as it isn't a friendly function. I think it is more there for the green control freaks that want to force anti idle laws to have activated, or soon to be forcefully activated on all of us by the leaf lickers in our society.

I had this featured ordered on my new CC. Totally useless!! The key has to remain in the on position, so when the truck does turn off all your electrical is on and draining your batteries! I will be ordering BD Diesel's "Cool Down Timer", cheaper, and does what I want and need....

Do they charge for the option when you order it? If they did what a load of bull, it literally only took the shop Forman 40 seconds to do this and this was his first time finding it with me helping. Your's is a cab and chassis, right? I remember seeing the option when I was helping my business partner order his cab and chassis. People seem to use the term "CC" now and I wonder if they are meaning cab and chassis or crew cab.
