Considering the Bakken

How in the world does a guy figure out how many gallons of paint to buy to paint walls and ceilings like this? And any ideas of HOW TO PAINT without leaving the ground would be appreciated, not to stable on a ladder much anymore :{

You are in luck, my wife paints interiors for a living.

Give me dimensions and she may be able to calculate that for you. Also is it a repaint or 1st time??? Big difference in paint, how it covers, etc. Cheap paint is not worth it in the long run, I know that.

Mike.

You can roll it using extendable poles but you really need to cut in with a brush where walls and ceiling meet for a decent looking job that will look good under all lighting conditions.

Penny tells me the floor to peak is 25' the room is 32' x 32' I dont have a tape in the house ???? and its raining like hell but it looks and sounds about right. We are painting the rest of the house so if we get this off a tad with all the windows and doors not that big a deal, the same color will go down a hall.

So tell this uninformed person what is a good paint, I built a house for some friends they bought one of those Behr primer and paint in 1 type things, their house is the same as ours and they want to paint it again. Touch that stuff and it flakes off the wall, and I primed the bare drywall just like the paint store guy said before it was applied. Color is going over white in ours the ceiling will remain white but the walls are going to be a very light tint of some color??? you know how Women are

Cant believe she took my tape out of the junk drawer

My wife HATES the paint / primer combo stuff. She will go off when I mention it tonight.

Is the paint flaking at the friends house or at your house???

My wife will pretty much only use Sherwin Williams and sometimes Benjamin Moore.

I will get with her tonight and she will have questions for you.

Ya know when someone gets a mental picture of a ranch home off the grid in Montana pretty sure that is not what comes to mind!!!!

Our paint is fine wife just wants something other than white on the walls we used the Sherwin Willams paint on ours. I didn't get to do it some of our family members built the house for Penny and I when we were gone when I retired.

Please tell her that im not dumb enough to use the all in 1 stuff. I used what they had left in side the chicken coop and even the chickens don't like it.

Maybe I should ott-ta edit that crack about knowing how Women are, Ya Think? :D

Penny went downstairs and found that we used Sherwin Williams Preprite pro block primer, that was on the bare drywall, and Cashmere interior Acrylic latex

I'll tell her about the chickens, she will laugh about that!!

I will be home in about 2 1/2 hours, will give her your dimensions. The Sherwin Williams primer and paint used when it was built will help give you a quality finish the second time. I have seen the difference time and time again in crappy paint vs. quality paint.

There is a saying up here...

"A good painter makes a carpenter what he ain't"......in otherwords a good painter covers the carpenter's mistakes and makes him look better at finish work than he really is.

She's Native American, should we skin Buffalo and live in a Tee Pee? or My Family were German immigrants we should live in a sod hut? I think ya might have bit off just a little more than ya want to with this one. :-laf ( just kidding all in fun)

She rarely lets me in the door once I get out in the AM. I have an Outhouse and a Forest if the need arises, Later when its lunch time we revert back a Century or so and she brings lunch OUT to where I or we (who ever is over) are and we have a noon meal, which is most times our largest of the day. And towards the end of the day, I or we come up to the house and sit on the deck drink a Barley Pop, She drinks wine ( you know how they are with firewater) and reflect on the days achievements. Before coming in to have the evening meal at a sit down dinner table, with cloth napkins and something other than a knife to eat with. Could even have a go at the music box while we eat our food, S*** Howdy we are S***in in High Cotton when that's going on. no burpin or fartin aloud at the dinner table neither!!! with the lit candles on the dinner table there mite be an explosion

Penny here!!

Gail has gone to Great lengths to make MY home what I want. He wanted to move here to pursue his dream of living like we do in the forest and without the need for very much outside intervention and surely no need for what the Government wants. We live in a house that I decorated and he likes it or at least has never said that he doesn't. The way we work things is, The House is mine, you can come to visit, stay, eat, live but under MY RULES. Gail has the Barn, shop, all the out buildings and does as he see's fit. The 4 acres of Garden are mine, the 1/2 acre of house garden is mine. The rest of the 35 acres is HIS to do what he want's to with it EXCEPT BRING IT INTO MY HOUSE!! If a person should want to go back to the 1700 hundreds take a look at his barn its like stepping into a time machine, That's 100% Hardcore out there!! :)

Penny

:-laf:-laf Sorry she gets a bit up tight at times, she's just kidding but I don't think that I have ever entered the house thru the front door  or the back door for that matter, most times I strip down in the Garage and slide into the TV room and watch the same boring shows on both brand new TV's, not much in the way of Channel selection up here one has a whirlpool going on one, the other looks like a Tornado

Penny,

Are all of these pictures of your "No Big Zone" house??? If so you have excellent taste (except in men??maybe??).

Sandy will be quite taken with these. Nice place.

Is that a picture of "Big" over the fireplace???

Mike.

Gail can roam where he want's within my house, I took the time to house break him, On occasions I have to swat his nose with a rolled up paper when he starts to circle and sniffin heavy.

Thank you,

We have Gail's Pard's and their Wives over for dinner, its funny to see them downtown and out helping do something around the place. And then see them when they come and have a sit down behave yourself dinner, as us wives call it. It does them no harm to be civil at times, Really Mike we are just like anyone else kick off your shoes in the Mud Room come on in and put your feet up. You notice the lack of a TV in the front room its for the lost art of conversation where people actually talk to each other,we have a small one on the kitchen counter to watch weather with Breakfast. Other than that the men go into Gail's cave and watch sports or what ever just like anyplace else.

Believe it or not Gail is very much into art, not the dime-store kind that he says is the only kind we can really afford, but Fine Art both Photography and Paintings or numbered prints. When we were in Paris the Curators of the Museum of Art would see some Cowboy with Boots and a Hat walk in and think REDNECK but he can talk about the masters just as well as many. I dont know if his books are pictured but he reads to obsession, The curio cabinet is some of his no touch things that he likes. His present favorite Artist is Kirby Sattler http://kirbysattler.sattlerartprint.com/ for a Birthday gift he received two of these he cherishes them.

So you see with his singing ability his BIG heart towards young people, I think that my choice in Men is very good!! at least I think so. ;)

Haha well Im a German Jew so I should live in a , uhhhhhh well im not going there!

It was a compliment, I know a few people that live off the grid and there houses would make a Tee Pee or Sod Hut look mighty nice!!

Beautiful house Penny!!!

sandy uses a color called Jersey cream in a situation like you have the tall ceilings.it offsets the stark white of the ceiling and will flow into other rooms. I will be home soon and get her opinion for you.

Thank You

We try to have at least some of the nice things, Lighting is a problem that I have to deal with. Gail has put in some new LED lights for more brightness in the kitchen the ones that we first had weren't going to make it. He told me of a new LED Technology that is coming (not fast enough for me) when it did they made a tremendous difference but are somewhat expensive, thank goodness they last for what seems like forever and they are a way better technology as Gail said.

We know what your talking about. We belong to an Off Grid Group, let me tell you even thou we have and use a wood cook-stove (because I want to) it is way better than going outside to cook on an open fire night after night. We have flush toilets, inside plumbing and a shower and bathtub instead of the creek out back!! We really don't know how those people do it, Gail calls them Ted's, short for Ted Kaczynski the bomber that live in MT.

You would be surprised how many are off grid here. My Parents and Brother have been off grid before it was popular, Gail helped them upgrade their systems, as a young girl I can remember doing my homework using oil lamps in a REAL LOG Cabin not a kit, that Father cut the trees down and built.

Thank You Mike

It will be greatly appreciated, Color has never been something that im strong in. I do know that we need something on the walls other than white it looks like a operating room but not so dark that it wont reflect the light in the evening.

Hi. This is Mikes wife here, how cold is it in Montana about Nov 1st? I love to fly. I keep telling Mike I am planning on turning into a traveling painter. Had a couple chances last year, but our little dog prevented me from doing so. Your home is beautiful! I agree you need to keep the white ceilings. That's such an important visual to your room. I really love Ben Moore Muresco ceiling white it has minimum splatter and great coverage. It also is a true white in color. Makes your ceiling look soft. For your walls I would recommend Ben Moore Regal Eggshell it has a little bit more sheen than the cashmere finish. And I don't mean shine, just a tiny bit more washable/wearable. One color paint I would recommend is Sherwin Williams Jersey Cream (SW7004) would look great with your wood trim, and stone work. Have use this color many times, and every time my customers have been pleased. It's a color that warms up a room, without taking over. The Ben Moore is pretty true coverage square footage, so the easiest way to calculate is to measure each wall. The front wall you can pretty much look at it, and decide if you think it's 2/3rds windows. Multiply height by length, then devide by that. Hope any of this is helpful. If you have questions let me know. Sandy
