Searched and didn't find a specific reference...

Surely MagHytec would not have sold me a diff cover if there were known clearance issues.

But it would be nice to hear from somebody who has fitted a MagHytec #AA 14-11.5 rear diff cover to their 2014-up Ram 2500 with the coil suspension before playing with gear oil today.

Truck is a '14 2500 4WD with G56 transmission.

Thanks for input.

Over on the Cummins forum, there have a couple of threads about it. If I remember right, there is a small clearance issue with the sway bar that is resolved by trimming a little bit on a couple of the fins.

Thanks!

I may need to register to search for the thread(s) to see how much grinding is needed, not sure I want to do that today.

It sure looks like the rear sway bar could be an issue. In years past I'd be okay with removing the bar, but since I will mount a popup camper on the truck next year I want to keep the bar.

Keep the sway bar the coil sprung trucks need it.

Maybe, depends on the platform, driver, and preferences. I'd agree that an anti-sway (roll) bar is probably 'required' on the front of coil-sprung rigs, on the rear there is more wiggle room.

For example, I have a heavily-modified V8 4Runner that is coil-sprung in the rear and had a sway bar on the rear axle. The sway bar has been off the car most of its 70,000+ miles, and the little (heavy) 4WD handles very well, including during high-speed evasive maneuvers.

However, I agree that for this application, particularly because I will mount a camper in the bed, retaining the bar is a good idea. :)

Bob nailed it, the rear coils spring trucks feel very odd with no rear sway bar even unloaded, they feel great with the front sway bar off though. If you look the coils are further inboard then something like a 4 runner and that makes a big difference, Im sure if the coils were in the same spot as leaf springs then it would be very different. With the rear diff cover the track bar will be an issue as well.

That's contrary to my experience on the 4Runner. The car was not great, arguably unsafe, for high-speed evasive maneuvers with the front bar off. It's fine with the rear bar off.

The 4Runner's coils don't look more inboard, and some quick and dirty measurements from the backing plate inward to the approx center of the coil shows: 13.5" on the 4Runner and 16" on the Ram 2500... If track width is included in percentages and placement, sounds and looks pretty similar to me.

Again, each driver, platform, and desired result can be different. Assume you guys know plenty, many/most TDR guys do, not my first rodeo either .

Having said that, I have not tried the Ram 2500 without the rear sway bar and didn't intend to (camper coming and all), but maybe I'll do a little test next summer...

Anyway, there is no dispute or disagreement apparently that the MagHytec cover won't fit this chassis. ;)

Photowrite, did you read the instructions? I went to mag hytecs site and read the instructions for your diff cover and they give notice that gm and dodge trucks may have to be fitted with shims to allow for sway bar clearance.............

Thanks for ideas and trying to help.

The instructions I have say essentially the same things, some applications and/or factory options may cause clearance problems with sway bars. However, these printed instructions are dated May 2012, so clearly not yet updated or necessarily applicable to the '14 2500s.

About three different guys in the thread on the other forum linked above have good personal experience that documents the issue. Clearance appears to be a challenge not just for the sway bar, but the track bar as well. The one guy that has a cover on his '14 2500 has a lift, and the track bar is higher and clears the cover, the sway bar is very close, maybe 1/8" clearance is what I think he said. Two other guys with stock trucks tried to fit a cover and are emphatic that it will not fit. That's good enough more me at the moment as I have other parts that need installing and a new diff. cover can wait.

MagHytec will surely update their design as needed when they have time.

Photo, I didn't read your post closely enough......I blew right past the mag-hytec brand. Some of the 2500 owners are buying the finned cover from ram that came on the max-tow dually's from a couple of years ago. It is a finned cover but doesn't increase the fluid capacity like the Mag-hytec.

Thanks for the update, and it's nice to know about the OEM finned aluminum cover availability.

The added capacity of the MagHytec is nice, but I also really like the easier draining and filling. Though in decades past I just drilled and tapped the diff housing for easy draining. For now I'll do nothing, I changed the diff oil the lazy/fast way and will look at covers again in the future.

Thanks,

James
