2500 vs 3500

I have a 2015 3500 SRW CCSB with the Aisin transmission. After 1300 miles, I love the truck and the transmission seems to shift firmly except when shifting from 3rd to 4th. It seems as if it's not sure it should shift. The problem is less pronounced when I pour on the coal but during reasonable driving it is a prolonged and aggravating shift from 3rd to 4th. This holds true in tow/haul mode as well. Is this normal?

Secondly, the transmission has a pronounced whine when not under acceleration. It is very noticeable when descending a hill and goes away if I shift into neutral. This is true even if I maintain engine rpms while in neutral. Is this normal?

Thanks for any help.

I recall reading in the diesel supplement a section about the 3-4 shifting and torque converter lockup, which is probably what you feel. Per the manual, it is normal........the whine you are hearing, no idea.

It's not an issue.....what you're experiencing is "shift flare"

https://www.turbodieselregister.com...-question-for-trans-guy?highlight=trans+flare

(Yes.....the thread mentions the 68RFE, but it applies to the AS69RC as well).

Only thing Ive noticed about the AISIN is that when it goes into 3rd when pulling hard and heavy, it seems to exhibit some converter shudder. Im heavy on the throttle at all times whether pulling hard or unloaded... so im sure I contribute to it, but im not gonna lift either. If it breaks it just freakin breaks!
Only whining I ever hear is under deceleration with tow/haul mode and exhaust brake on full... when it backs into 3rd and 2nd gear there is a very pronounced whine coming from the drivetrain..

When it shifts into 3rd the TC locks , then it shifts into 4th. Time is slightly longer than you are probably used to. Whine is not normal.......are you sure its not the rearend?

Thanks; I'm pretty sure it's not the rear. When I hear the whine while descending a hill and put the transmission into neutral, the whine stops.

When you put the trans in neutral it takes the load off the rear. A lot of differentials will whine just a little on the coast side of things.

X2

C'mon Wingate, all you have to do is let off just a little and it drops right into gear ,then get back into it, after a while it becomes habitual. I'm sure you won't break anything, but why add stress to the DL when all you have to do is let off the go pedal maybe 15%.

interesting idea, but no.. ima put the wood to whatever I drive. I maintain them well, but I expect them to go in return!. hahaha.. Looking like a Stryker/Informant is getting ordered tomorrow! I treated the 06 model the same way and it never failed.. if either of them ever do, Ill just "billet" proof it.
I would say that its why ive had 3 engines in my company truck in 130K miles, but its a Ford, so no excuses are necessary!
