Sears typically will have the needed 5/16" 8-point socket in stock...if you have one near you it's worth just picking one up.

No more often than I do this think I'll try Wayne's trick and if not pick a 8 pt up from Sears. We also have a Harbor Freight here and you can usually get a entire set for what one socket costs at Sears. They are cheap tools but work fine for this kind of stuff.

Thanks for the confirmation on locknut tightening. Sounds right to me. I gotta change my fluid soon so I'll do my first band adjustment. I'm sure it will go fine. Also going to try a Mag HyTec DD pan.

if it makes you feel any better the front band is usually the one that goes outta whack. the rear band usually goes much longer before it needs any adjustment.

You can sacrifice a deep well socket to make one like below if you REALLY want to use a torque wrench.

I made one like this years (30+) ago. for what I don't remember. couldn't find it but this picture gives you the idea. stick the wrench in the cut out to hold the adjuster and torque away. Might have to re-position a couple of times but that's life.

That is brilliant. That's one of those problems I doubt I could have ever come up with a solution.

Curious... I have an 05 2500... 105k miles on it (just bought it at 95k).... What symptoms would indicate a band adjustment is needed or should one just do it as precautionary?

Trans works great, just shuttle shifts sometimes when I am on it light, but I think they all do that.

I have been putting a governor pressure sensor and solenoid in from cascadetransmissionparts.com and it has been fixing a lot of shuttle shifting and weird shifts. Also add a bottle of lucas trans fix just to help coat things. If you cant remember the last time the trans has been serviced or its a new pickuo to you, I would suggest doing it.

If you have to ask it needs to be done.
If the trans is in descent shape it might fix the shuttle shift problem. Took care of mine about 85k miles ago. no shuttle shift since then. 198k miles on the STOCK trans now.
