A buddy with an 06 (standard radio, no nav or bluetooth) is looking at replacement stereo's. Car toys told him it has some kind of tie-in with the TIPM and that it will turn on the CEL if you don't use some extra little (magic?) adapter.
I call BS.
Your thoughts?

I just checked Crutchfield.com and they don't mention anything other than an antenna adapter and a dash kit. I used my '06 for reference.

Maybe the guy who did has had better things to do in the last 10 hrs than read TDR.

What can be better than this...........:D

I wish I had been on here instead of getting brain freeze from the facial whitewash running the snowblower this afternoon.....Oo.

Just disconnect the radio connectors and see for yourself. It will make all the other modules mad, but it should not set a CEL.

There is some truth to it, but not in your buddies setup. When I installed a Lockpick for my REC nav radio I could not start the truck, the CAN communication was broken. It took several Lockpicks to get it right, but I still have an airbag warning message displayed every now and again.

here is some truth to the radio being tied to TIPM, if the truck pulls to much power form the battery and drops the voltage below a threashhold, it turns stuff off. Example, if it is real cold, when I start my truck, radio is on during the preheat cycle, I start, notice the battery voltage drops, when I release the key after starting, the radio is off and will not come back on until I go through a off/on cycle of the key. Was told by the dealer it was the TIPM doing its job to save electronics from low voltages. 2006 with standard radio.

I think the only adaptor that's needed is for models that have the upgraded Infinity system or came with a Nav radio or both.

After market or modified dash bezels can be bought online to fit double din radios for a factory look. The bezels are not cheap though.

Ive done a few stereo installs in 3rd gens with no issues but always used a separate amp so the stock harness was only powering the head unit but the head unit was not powering the speakers, if that makes sense.

I needed an adapter for Canbus for my stereo upgrade in my early build 2006 Megacab. I don't have steering wheel controls. Adapter was about $20. I went with Alpine. I normally use NanoUSB for music in all vehicles. Memory stick costs about $10. Not a big deal if it disappears.

Good info WC - thanks.
Do you have the infinity sound system or nav? What did it do to make you realize you needed the adapter?

I only had stock stereo. No infinity. No factory nav. Crutchfield said the adapter was necessary. Truck was a daily driver at the time. I didn't want any down time waiting on parts. I also did the indash alpine amp which did require a separate power wire from the battery.

Any of the other CAN modules the truck is equipped with.
Question on the Lockpick that plugs between the factory plug and the Lockpick plug, can I run a module that bypasses the CAN Buss eliminating my airbag light from intermittently coming on? I've just put up with it and have never had any issues.
