I guess I must be the only guy that likes the bed cam . It works great for hooking up my 5 th wheel and seeing if your gear is still in the bed. The back up camera in the mirror works fine especially when used in conjunction with those big rearview mirrors !

If you see a back up cam on the 8.4, then you will not think it looks good on the mirror! Night and day difference!!!! SNOKING

Just used the camera for the first time today. Absolute waste of Money. It Shows up in my big screen. I can see the tool box real welll but the hitch is too small to see very well. Maybe it can be adjusted?

That was unexpected! I absolutely love my camera every time I use it. We just got back from a trip to AZ. (Goodguys) I had an audience hooking up while leaving the park we were staying at. I backed right up under that pin box like never before. Them old boys were holding their coffee cups watching just shaking their heads waiting for a mishap. To be honest, it was the first time I just backed under without double checking the cam. Locked in and hooked the chains up in no time flat. Awesome!

Just keep using it 12V98, I think you'll get used to it. When the wind is blowing hard, it's nice to check things out in the bed to be sure something is not blowing out too.

I will be doing this in the future to mine as well. having to get in and out several times of the truck is a real pain. Even though I do not tow my 5er that much it will be nice to have the bed camera where it should be. Glad someone did a write up with pics.

That IS pretty cool! My boys will be doing that to their trucks after driving mine!

Well hopefully some one will figure out how to have the Park View camera switched to the 8.4 display, maybe Lock Pick will figure it out. Just not as good on the mirror as it is on the 8.4 display. They should have just provide a toggle button rather than putting on the mirror. Or allowed one to reverse them. Looking in the mirror to back up and having the hitch visible right on the mirror makes more sense.

Stab wrote "hooked the chains up"? What chains???

Nebraska requires "safety chains". The state is NOT that stringent on it BUT, South Dakota IS. (A state we travel to often).
I have only been checked for safety chains once & it was in SD.

Here's a thought: I wonder if it's just the difference between the long & short boxes? If so, it should be adjustable. :-laf

In a fifth wheel hitch? The OTR semi's in those states have to have safety chains? Could you link to the state code on that?

http://www.everything-about-rving.c...red-to-tow-a-5th-wheel-trailer-in-the-us.html

FMCSA does not require a 5th wheel to king pin attachment of a trailer to have safety chains. Put a dolly under the trailer and it becomes what they call a "full trailer" and then it requires safety chains. Your state law is mis-written and I am sure that you are not requiring this of OTR trucks. However the way it is written does not exempt OTR trucks.

http://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/title49/section/393.70

Here is what Washington has to say.

(2) This regulation is not for those arrangements used for drawing another vehicle by means of a tow truck, semitrailer with a fifth wheel type hitch, or wrecker unless coupled by ball and coupler.

http://app.leg.wa.gov/WAC/default.aspx?cite=204-70&full=true

You sure that is not hidden in Nebraska law somewhere?

From Nebraska document

(4) Cabin trailers, recreational trailers, and utility trailers as defined in
Section 60-301, when being towed upon a highway, shall be securely connected
to the towing vehicle by means of two safety chains or safety cables in addition
to the hitch or other primary connecting device. Such safety chains or safety
cables shall be so attached and shall be of sufficient breaking load strength so
as to prevent any portion of such trailer drawbar from touching the roadway if
the hitch or other primary connecting device becomes disengaged from the
towing vehicle.

http://www.transportation.nebraska.gov/rpt/pdfs/netruckguide.pdf

Draw Bar, 5th wheels do not have draw bars. Someone is mis-applying the law!

Chris

The problem is that Ram should have let the drive pick which camera they want to use and be able to toggle the 8.4 screen between them. The lock pic allows that.

Here is South Dakota's ruling:

32-19-9. Chains or cables required in addition to coupling--Fifth wheel and kingpin coupling--Violation as misdemeanor. Every trailer which shall be towed on the public highways at a speed in excess of twenty miles per hour shall be coupled to the towing vehicle by means of a safety chain, chains, cables, or equivalent devices in addition to the regular trailer hitch or coupling. This requirement does not apply to a semitrailer having a connecting device composed of a fifth wheel and kingpin assembly meeting the requirement of the interstate commerce commission, nor to a pole, pipe, casing, log, or piling dolly. Any person who violates this section is guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor.

32-19-10. Safety chain slack and coupling--Violation as misdemeanor. No more slack shall be left in safety chains, cables, or equivalent devices than shall be necessary to permit proper turning and the safety chains, cables, or equivalent device shall be so connected to the towed and towing vehicle and to the drawbar to prevent the drawbar from dropping to the ground if the drawbar fails and shall be of sufficient strength to control the trailer in event of failure of the regular trailer hitch or coupling. Any person who violates this section is guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor.

Again SD talks about drawbar just like Nebraska!

Your two states need to get a life. Now for South Dakota can in apply it's laws to vehicles licensed out of state is an issue! I know license requirements and tonnage refers back to the state one in licensed in.

I see Reese has safety chains that pin onto the bed rails.

Cummins12V98, did you have your safety chains attached when you were in SD? If you license in SD, you better get those safety chains ordered ASP!

I would also note that the king pin on recreational trailers is the same standard size and dimension as a semi trailer. So does it meet the requirement of the interstate commerce commission? A semi trailer is defined as one where the tow vehicle carries some of the trailers weight!

Additionally the design of some 5th wheel hitches and trailer pin boxes would lead to interference between them and safety chains.

On my 11 DRW a camera really isn't needed for my 5th wheel or my gooseneck, but the 14 short bed came with the factory tri-fold cover, with that folded forward I can not see my gooseneck ball. The camera is useless to me. The 14 is driven a lot more unloaded than loaded, so I would rather have the back-up camera in the 8.4 screen than rear view mirror. Even if the cover wasn't in the way I would like the bed camera in the mirror, just makes more sense to me to be "heads up" when hooking up. Having that big screen would be nice to use when hooking to a tag along trailer, when I might not be able to see the trailer anyway

Once you have seen the Park View on the 8.4 and the mirror which I have, you will know that you want it on the 8.4 and not the mirror!!! SNOKING

Once you have seen the Park View on the 8.4 and the mirror............"which I have".........What are you saying??????

I have driven other new RAMs with the Park View on the 8.4 display, and it is much better there than on the mirror!!!!!

Guess I will call Lock Pict Monday and see what they have to say about moving them around or get a new RAM without the bed view camera and installing Lock Pict and a small camera on the box that looks straight at the hitch. If I understand there web site, you can add additional camera's and toggle them on the 8.4 display. Which might give a better picture of the pin being to high or low! SNOKING

Waiting for a price from DS. They have two Granite Crystal 3500 SRW, Aisin, Big Horns with bucket seats, Luxury Group, Cold weather group, 8.4 W/O Nav, ParkSense, ParkView, Power Adjustable Pedals. MSRP $59095, so should be around $49-50K

They say they can not install factory 5th wheel prep, and recommend B$W turn over. I replied with put this part number for the four punks in bed of the truck along with the wheel to wheel steps and tell me how much it cost, I will install the pucks and steps.

Waiting!
