Curious about seeing GVWR on the trailer

We're planning our third trip to Alaska. Our last trip was in Jul 06 with my signature 05 Dodge and our (then) Lance truck camper. This trip will be towing our 27' Arctic Fox 5th wheel. We plan to leave on about 1 July of this year.

I'll welcome any tips and/or advice from anyone who has made the trip in the last 9 years. I'm sure things have changed in the much time. Information such as cost of diesel and RV Parks through Canada. We plan on taking the Cassiar Highway both ways because it's shorter and more scenic.

Greetings from Alaska. I put a post over at RV.NET with Weather and Road Conditions May 2015 with fuel prices and road conditions. Campground prices were in the $30-$35 range. Last I heard the last 75 miles of the Cassiar was still in rough shape. Diesel was $1.07/L and up, mostly up. The only road issues, other than the Cassiar, will be from Burwash Landing to the border. There were a number of sections where the pavement was gone but it was gravel not quite ready fr new pavement. There were few big frost heaves. Where do you plan to cross the border?

Enjoy the trip, This was our 10th since May 2007.

I can see it would be good both ways but as long as everyone agree to a schedule I think it would be fine. Someone that has made the trip wild be helpful.

Sounds like a PLAN! Some people like to do this trip alone. I think it would be better in a caravan.

Last two trips were just us. This one will also. I don't want to be tied to other peoples undecidedness because we know what we want to do and how much time we want to spend. Having said that we are not locked into a ridged itinerary. If we like a particular place we may stay longer and if we don't like a particular, we'll go on. We decide as we go.

Thank you everyone for the great advice. Terry Jay, those are very helpful tips.

Isn't it shorter if you come up thru Edmonton Alberta and then cut thru NE BC? David

We're going Albuquerque to Seattle, to Vancouver to Hyder, Alaska to Whitehorse, Yukon to Tok, AK, to Fairbanks, AK and on to Anchorage, AK. I believe this is the shortest way.

George,
You and I have done this several times.
I would encourage you to become a fisherman.
We live mostly on trout and salmon during this trip and it is the main reason we go.
When in Alaska look for the Red and Silver runs along the Kenai. Combat fishing is OK and productive If you want to do it yourself.
Check out Bings crossing near Soldotna.
Have a great trip.
Rog (also from NM)

I was just curious as Google maps show it being over 100 miles shorter thru Alberta, but what's a hundred miles on a trip like that. I want to do that trip someday as well but I'm already half way there. Have a safe and fun trip. David

The Cassiar Hwy is far more scenic. We've dome it both ways.

K5IP, I love to fish and do often. My problem is that my wife doesn't like fish.

Has anyone been to Katmai NP to view grizzlies in Geographic Harber or Brooks Falls? We're scheduled to go to Brooks Falls on 15 Jul 15. Any feed back is welcomed.

No one in all of TDR have ever been to Katmai NP, AK, which is across the Shalikof Strait from Kodial?

We plan on crossing the border at Beaver Creek going into Tok.

Where are diesel prices cheaper, Watson Lake or Whitehorse in the Yukon?

george

The cheapest fuel is at Contact Creek lodge, before you get to Watson Lake. It is notably cheaper than fuel in Ft Nelson. Next cheapest is at Otter Falls Cutoff a bit before Haines Junction. We did note the posted prices were higher in Watson Lake or Whitehorse than Contact Creek.

Thanks Terry Jay. I'm making a note on that and will diesel up there.

Terry, I can't find Contact Creek lodge on any map. How far and which direction from the Cassiar Hwy turn off is it
