Just moved my backhoe total load was about 30K with truck another 8K or so.

When I started in first gear and brought the rpm's up, and went to shift into second the rpm's would spike for a couple seconds and then come back to normal.

Almost acted like a runaway engine? Didn't do it all the time, but enough to be annoying. I have a smarty and I set it back to stock for the tow, I didn't want to destroy anything as I had to up and down a couple tall mts.

If my sig is still MIA it is a 03, 6 speed.

Yes it was heavy. Had to go up a 15 mile climb some of it 9.5%. Most of it was in 4th at 33mph ish with moderate throttle. The steep parts I was down to 25mph in 3rd hard on the throttle.

I was very surprised at how it climbed with this load.

Coming down the other side with equal % I was a little nervous. I was able to maintain 30-35 in 3rd gear with a lot of brake. A engine brake would have been nice.

580CK? I have a ~'70 580CK without a cab, but otherwise looks the same. I didn't think they where that heavy, in fact I am pretty sure mine is just under 10K. How heavy is the trailer?

I have seen the rpm spike in lower gears when your left foot going down is faster than your right foot coming up during the shift.

Exhaust brakes are very nice to have and I couldn't imagine towing down grades without one.

It is a 680 not a 580.

Backhoe is listed at 15K in my owners manual, but I took it across scales right after I bought it and it was at 19,500. Trailer weighed 10K tare.

How much are the engine brakes? I will be moving this thing a couple times a year to and from my camp.

Gotcha, yeah they are a little bigger at around 15K lbs for the tractor.

EDIT: that's a lot heavier than I would have expected.

Exhaust brakes are around $1500 installed... Or were last I looked.

get the bd, very easy to install, on the 03 there is a little more wiring than on the 05.5 to 07.5, they go through the ecm for the accelerator switch, it has been 12 years since i installed them on our 03's but i think it connects to the tps. gear down a little lower going down hill, find a gear you do not have to use the brakes. the rpm jump is normal, it keeps the spike out of the rail pressure. here is pix at 44,000 cgw and 39,600 cgw

I was approaching red line with 3rd gear and needed lots of brake to keep it away at 30-35 mph. It was a 9+% grade. Love your pics. I guess I could have been in the 15mph range in 2nd?

Glad I am not the only one that goes big once in a while.

Holy heavy!

I agree. If I had a engine brake and trailer brakes were better on the rented trailer I would have not been worried at all.

On the over revving thing, when it did it, it was well into red zone of the tach. I didn't like that. I wonder if it has to do with no waste gate to bleed off boost pressure?

580CK?

I have seen the rpm spike in lower gears when your left foot going down is faster than your right foot coming up during the shift.

I agree. Right before an upshift, back out of the throttle. Shifting under full power will slip the clutch as it releases. Nice load! I would get an exhaust brake with that load and 9% grades. I would use 1st or 2nd with that load and 9%, 3rd would be ok with an exhaust brake. Keep on truckin!
