Heading Chico to SF bay area yesterday. 2006 5.9 48re CEL came on. Drove 90 mi to dealer, they said code 1740. Rented car to get to SF. Diagnosis is toast TC and $8k for factory rebuilt trans. They say don't drive. Want to get truck to either J&H in Redding or good shop in Sacramento (need recommendation here) for decision on something better than factory. Should I attempt to drive truck (no problem while CEL was on for 90mi)? Tough being away from home base but need to make 'fish or cut bait' decision this a.m. and return rental to Fairfield. Thanks in advance for any help.
Wayne (also no cell !)

I would also check out HMS diesel in Dublin, I have a few friends that got there transmission done there with great results. So aside from the light coming on did the truck do anything weird? transmission shift odd? Truck still moved? If the truck is driving fine and its just a code I would get a 2nd opinion fast.

Get a few quotes including off Cragslist to ship your truck to J&H. Maybe even check U-Ship. It's cheaper to get quote then get towed from the side of the road. Get a throw away prepaid cell phone then see if the truck will make it is asking/risking to be a road hazard. This said it's only the TCC that is slipping so you can make it a ways before the heat builds up from an unlocked converter, but, not long trips.

Suggest AAA membership for the future.

I would risk driving it to another shop over paying $8k for a dealer rebuild. You didn't mention how many miles on your trans but as AEdelheit mentioned it would be worth a second opinion at the least. Sorry can't help with shop suggestions in the area.

Not always toasted trans when you get a 1740.Very often it's not
ENGINE DTCS PRESENT
TRANSMISSION DTCS PRESENT
TRANSMISSION TEMPERATURE TOO COLD
OIL PAN CONTAINS EXCESSIVE DEBRIS
3-4 SHIFT SOLENOID
SHAFT OR SEAL DAMAGE
TCC SOLENOID
TORQUE CONVERTER

I can't recommend any shop, but now is the time you have a bullet proof build done on your 48re. For the kind of money you were quoted for only a stock 48re, you could get a highly modified better built trans, JMHO.

Exactly...assuming it's not a much simpler fix as Bob4x4 mentioned.

5k got me Goerand master rebuild kit , their modded valvebody, their triple disk T.C. and awesome builder at Inglewood Transmissions

Problem resolved, truck and driver now at home. THANK YOU to all who responded to my plea. Below is a summary of events after my post on '911'.

Shortly after posting I located an internet article by TDR member Joe Leonard (of MOPAR Truck Parts) on the build of his 48RE for towing by ATO Performance Transmissions in Rancho Cordova (about 55 miles from my truck). A late a.m. call to ATO confirmed member input that the 1740 code is usually not serious especially since I drove it almost 100 miles with no problems. Drove 60mph, 1600 rpm and the cleared code did not return. On arrival at ATO they immediately installed a gauge to check governor pressure during a very 'spirited' test drive. ATF was analyzed and everything looked fine. Since I was there I was willing to leave the truck for a more detailed inspection and repair/rebuild if necessary. ATO then decides to pull the pan. The pan interior has NO metal, the magnet has a thin layer of band/clutch (??) dust. ATO adjusted 2nd gear band and at my reqeust installed a deep aluminum pan AFTER drilling, tapping and installing a plug for temp sensor (NC). I was a late afternoon walk-in and they spent close to 4 hours with me and the truck. The bill..cost of pan (less than mfg. site) and $47.50 labor! Owner Jim Galatioto, Scott and Becky (family run) treated me like family. I was disappointed that I did not need an ATO HD 48RE...my 1st choice when the time comes.

Back in 2002 my 94 Ram 2500HD gasser seemed to need a higher RPM to shift from 2nd to 3rd. I took it to AAMCO and when they dropped the pan they stated that it was toast and said it was not worth servicing, that it needed to be rebuilt. I found a local transmission shop that had rebuilt transmissions on the shelf and would buy my old core to help in the price, with me doing it myself. They asked me to bring it in for diagnoses and would service it for free if indeed it needed to be rebuilt. They serviced it and adjusted the bands, and its still running with the same trans today, as the person who bought it in 2005, lives a mile away from me. Glad to hear your truck is OK.
