Rolled my 04 Gen 3 HO three times after being cutoff and hit by a Semi-tractor. Looking to find a Federally smog approved 5.9L that I can register in CA. I think I need a CA pre-smog 5.9. Not even sure if you could buy an HO 5.9L engine in CA before the 2004 HO model that I bought in OH. I just know that in 2004 or after CA did not allow an HO engine to be sold, or one without CA emissions equipment.

Sorry if I'm not making sense. Concussion has my mind working sub-optimal. Just looking for some advice for looking for a replacement Cummins similarly equipped as mine.
I would even consider the newer Gen 4 engine after the de-tuning issues for CA smog were resolved. What year was that?

Also when did the 48RE get replaced by the new automatic? (model # ?)

All advice and experiences welcome.

Joe

Sorry for your loss, but as long as your OK you can always replace the truck. As long as it has more than 7,500 miles on it when purchased a new or used truck can be brought into CA but it will have to pass the normal smog test. The new transmission (68RFE) was 2007.5 with 6.7 engines. Depending on your budget you may want to stay pre 2007 or 2013 or newer as the trucks will be more in line mileage wise to your 2004. Of course a 2013+ is hands down a nicer truck than what you had.
Have you considered buying the 2004 from the insurance company?

The 48re came in all trucks at the 04.5 year . Start of the "600" motor. Find an 03-04 HO they will get better mileage no third injection event

Sag2...good info. Thanks. Yes Ive considered buying it, but not sure if the federal smog engine in it might cause a ton of problems if putting in a previously CA smog truck. Im quite sure the custom built transmission I put in it 50K ago is not damaged. IMO the fact that the alum drive shaft broke its weld to the rear u-joint immediately upon impact to the rear axle, and immediately slipped out of the transmission, suggests there was no significant torque put on the transmission tailpiece. It cost me $5K and Id dearly love to put it in another 04 (any other years it would fit?). But matching the engine smog specs and HO model to a used truck is a bigger problem, IMO. So Ive resigned myself to letting the engine and transmission go and living with whatever trans is in a used truck. What would you do with the wreck? BTW, all semi impact was behind the driver's door, engine was running when I turned the key off, 10 seconds after roll stopped.

p-Bar....my early 04 (not 2004.5) built for OH came with a 48RE. Thanks for your advice on the 03-04 engine performance spec. My 04 was getting 20 on hwy, and ran as strong as new with 209K on it (all stock).

All trucks 04.5-07 were 50 state trucks. It was 03-04 that had 3 different levels, Cali, SO, HO; however, as it has been said if it is a used vehicle you can bring it into Cali.

Glad you are on the top side of the grass. That's all that matters.

What would you do with the wreck?
What's the buyback cost? Part it out and spare parts for your next truck. Check the engine mounts for cracks or breakage and the trans case for cracks. Tearing off the drive shaft is cause for a close inspection for other damage. Use the transmission in your next truck and the engine has significant value used - should cover buyback and more alone. A sawsall makes pulling things easy and take the rest down as scrap metal with your new truck.

All good info guys thanks. If I had a free place to store the wreck Id buy it. No salvage $ value from Insurance Co yet. Guess I better crawl under it and take a look for cracks on Eng & Trans.

Anyone knows years the 48RE trans was used?

Whats involved in getting a 2004 HO up to CA smog specs, from 49 state?

Like others have said, if you are purchasing the "non Cali" truck used with more then 7500 miles on it, it is automatically eligible to be "imported" into California with NO modfications. In terms of passing the "normal" smog test, that is simply the soot "snap" test which more then likely any UNMODIFIED, well maintained truck will easily pass.

Thank You seafish...that detail swam right by me. I will confirm that with my SMOG shop.

They hook up to the 5.9's now checking for codes. It used to be visual and snap test. I'd imagine the dyno rollers are next.

That engine and transmission will drop into any auto truck from 2003 to early 2007 and there a smog tech that will find the difference. Sometimes you can pick up a decent truck wholesale or private party form someone that cannot afford to replace the broken parts, engine especially. Depending on how much work you want to do and what you can find you might be able to upgrade with what the insurance company gives you.

Thanks for that cerberusiam. A garage owner told me i would have to find a truck with an engine that matched the one in my Federal 49 state HO re: smog certified Federal or Calif. for my motor to run properly in it. He showed me where to look for the smog certification tag on the engine. I believe it was driver side of block. Is that true?

An 04 HO long block will work with any ECM from 03-07 as long as it's a 5.9. The 04.5-07 would benefit from custom tuning but it will run just fine on stock tuning too.

My motor is basically an 03-04 HO now and my ECM doesn't know the difference.

MojaveJoe It look's Like maybe your over in Mojave ? I am in Apple Valley and have a storage yard less then 1/2 mile from me that rent's spaces for 30 buck's a month . and Very secure yard too boot . I'de hat to see you loos the truck because you can't find a place to stash it ..Let me know if you need help.

Nope. Take an 06 truck with a blown engine, pull all the harnesses, sensors, VC riser\cover, etc, off the 06 engine and transfer to the 04 engine and reinstall. It will run perfectly fine and with the CARB stickers and such from the 06 no one will ever know there is a difference. All the electronics and data plates stay wit the platform (truck), all that gets transferred is the long block and the electronics don't care an won't know it has different pistons and injectors.

The transmission will even work with a bracket for the TTVA that can be sourced form PATC.
