I got the news while I'll was enjoying my weekend at Lake Mohave, the rear axle was out of round enough to scramble my 2014 rear axle with 3:42 gears. Turned in truck with rear noise complaint at 14K miles, and the Dealer called to give us with the bad news. A complete axle is on the way and I'll have to drive my 07 until repaired. It's good the Dealer expedited the new assembly and they have stepped up to the plate to help get my work truck back in service quickly. It must have been assembled that way, I know every manufacture has lemons, but why me when I have to hear it from Ford Truck fans. My company truck is the first Dodge they have purchased, and maybe the last if I keep having major problems like this.

Sorry to hear that. If their Fords aren't breaking down all the time, this will stick out like a sore thumb ..

What is "out of round"?

I'm aware of a few that came from the factory with improperly adjusted R&P's and needed a new set of gears, but that's it. There are a few other things that can go wrong, but axles are as basic as they get.

I've set up several R&P's in my life, but I've never heard the term "out of round". Really curious what the dealer means.

I'll know more today, but the service writer stated the shaft was warped, out of round, and caused the gears to mesh improperly that caused the damage. I asked to change them to 3:73 but warranty won't cover it, they have to go back to spec, then pay for 3:42 change to 3:73.

Talked to the mechanic last night, turns out the passenger side axle was not properly torqued and became loose destroying the bearings. He said the pinion and ring gear are OK, and that the assembly is being rebuilt. I don't know why the service writer told me an entire axle assembly was being replaced, go figure. Ü

I am at 93k with my 07.5 and have as of yesterday replaced rear ring gear/pinion to change from 4.11 to 3.73 and replaced entire carrier. The carrier gears shelled off and went bad.

Ask him if it was the inner bearings or the outer hub bearings please :-laf I think your mechanic is blowing smoke up your dress... The AAM 11" axle is a full float design and the axle shafts do not support the weight of the truck; they merely transfers power.

Hell, if the axle shaft broke, the shaft can be pulled with a socket and a screwdriver, and.......you could limp your truck home on one axle shaft. This is why FF axles are so popular with rock crawlers.

I'm not saying that there's NOT a problem with your rear axle. I'm just pointing out that he has mis-diagnosed what actually happened.

Well, the way companies outsource these days, that could be true.

While I do not know this to be fact, I can't help but think AAM does this in house as the shaft is likely one of the easiest things to make in a complete axle assembly.

it is almost foolish for Ford guys to condemn Ram for this because an outsourced part failed?

Fortunately (for me) I am out of high school and am not burdened with such concerns. :)

Well as long as they get it fixed, it could be anything they want. I'm aware of how the floating axle is installed, I'm just not in a habit of telling a tech he's wrong when it's on their dime. Maybe I misunderstood, after all we were having a conversation through our car windows. Maybe I'll be able to get the parts list when completed then I'll post that here on TDR.

Update! Still waiting for parts, the dealer here in Ontario Ca really sucks. My truck is a working truck and has been down now for 7 working days and counting. I leave messages with the service writer and get no response, even if it's the same excuse, at least return my calls. This has left a sour note with my company and doubt they will buy another Dodge Ram. If we got a better response and over nighted the parts, it might have not been as bad, but the 4 day weekend at Lake Mohave, all I heard about was why did we buy a Dodge. With less than 15K miles on it there's no excuse and the dealer should do every thing in its power to GET MY PARTS. If I don't get a positive response today, I'm going to stop being nice guy and raise holy hell with them and up the chain of command.

We have a dually in the shop waiting on rear diff parts with no release date yet..................way to go FCA

Parts in, working on it now, here is pic of what we were waiting for.

If the Ontario Dodge dealer is anything like the VW dealer there Not only run but Run As Fast as you Can . The VW Dealer not only screwed up our last car they damaged it and tried to blame it on us . that didn't fly so well. VW them Selves stepped up and handled what Ontario VW couldn't do .

Well I'll have to walk back some of the negative comments, but it was the conflicting reports from the mechanic vrs the Service Writer. I can see now the reason for the long shipping time. It was ordered on 10/2 and just arrived today (10/9). But the non returned phone calls is bugging me, I didn't call every hour. And there's other issues recently at this dealership that has me soured on them. They are great for quick and cheap oil changes till midnight, but I won't let them repair my personal truck. Company truck goes where I'm told to go. I really miss the old Frahm Dodge that concentrated on trucks in a horse town and allways gave me good service. They were bought out when the economy took a crap, and the new owners concentrate on cars.
