Is it possible to adapt a 68RFE to a 5. 9L. I am asking this because my G-56 gave up the ghost and I would like to convert my truck to an automatic. I have a good 68RFE core sitting on the garage floor. A while back I talked to suncoast about switching the truck to a 48RE and they said it can be done with their shifter paddle and transmission command module. Never did get a response as to if there is an adapter plate out there to mate 68RFE to 5. 9l. If anybody knows where I can get the products needed to accomplish this it would be much appreciated.

Don't know about a 68RE but a 68RFE is a totally different animal than the older RE units. Engine adapter is probably the least of the problems.

There are a couple solutions for the older RE units to swap in, so far have not heard if anyone has a 68RFE controller and whta has to be done to the trans to make it work with it. The factory transmission is fully electronic, hence the FE designation. That means putting it in gear with the shifter doesn't really do anything but activate a program. All the shift points are done by solenoid based on inputs from the ECU. Line pressure is monitored and modified based on parameters. Clutch fill rate indexes are monitored and used to determine shifting and gears. The trans is under clutched and over TQ managed in stock form so depending on the controller, programming, power levels, things can and will need to change.

Suncoast was supposed to be develping a package with trans and controller but have never heard if the have it debugged yet. Expectd price was going to be in the $10k range. Have to call them and see if they have made any progress yet.

Thanks for the reply. I did email suncoast today and hope to hear from them soon. I really am surprised this swap hasn't been accomplished yet being that the 68rfe has been out for almost 7 years now. I'm glad suncoast has addressed the under clutched issue with this trans. Now they need to give us the controller and adapter plate, so we can do swaps.

I have been inquiring about something similar for a year or two now. Either a built 68, or Aisin swap into my 5. 9l. . Im not interested in using the truck for performance, but would love to take advantage of have a couple extra gears when pulling. Would love to see someone actually develop complete kit. .
At one time, there was a company called Howards Conversions that tried installing some Allisons behond Cummins, but I think they gave up on it...

The Ally into a 2x4 or 4x4 is a done deal if one wants to drop the cash, its around $10k to source all the parts in a package. The Ally is a lot easier to do because there are stand alone controllers and programs for it, has been for a lot years as they are used behind the ISB all the time. The custom programs form PCS are easier to build because they a have a starting point.

Not so with the 68RFE. The stock programs are specific to the Dodge platform so it has to be re-written or written from scratch to implent the controls and make it work correctly. Difference from building something from a full set of schematics and functional specs as oppose dot creating a finished product from a crude scetch on a napkin and no context. It cna be done, R&D is a lot higher, time line is a lot longer, and considering the current economic climate its a crap shoot whether it will pay off.

I keep hoping. . but at the same time, im planning for a 48RE build in the future. If I end up building the 48, I will probably throw some hp at it to try and help drive thru the huge hole when going into 3rd gear with a heavy load.
