After only a few months of being in, my 2 1/2 to 2" receiver adapter was very hard to remove. Took a hammer, crow bar and lube to get out. It was damp inside the bottom of the receiver and the whole thing was quickly getting rusted. I am going to leave the hitch and adapter out from now on because the adapter traps moisture. The factory and the Curt HD hitch both already need some touch-up repainting.

Do you live in an area where they treat the roads with salt?

Is your curt HD hitch part of the trailer? Or is it a gooseneck?

Have had my adapter sleeve in for almost 3 years, have used a trailer hitch, then had a Bully Dog bump pad/step in the other times...sleeve isn't rusty, nor sticking.
I live where it snows and rains, salt nor water has caused rust.

There is road salt here although I didn't drive much in bad weather this winter. The Curt receiver is one I added last spring because the 2012 factory hitch is not rated for my 1540 pounds of tongue weight. Don't know why my adapter is so rusted if other's aren't. It is a GM adapter though. It came from a Chevy I traded. That might explain it!:D

I am sure if I had a 2.5" class 5 receiver hitch I would update my draw bars to match. Maybe save the adapter for some small 2" ball type trailers or if it was for a Chevy, maybe give away:)

Agreed. I found that using the adapter started to deform my hitch pin and also actually boogered up the hitch pin hole on the truck. I think having a small gap between the load on the drawbar and the receiver hitch itself allowed for some movement and leverage with the pin...instead of relying on only shear forces at the pin.

....not to mention all the annoying looseness of using them.

I went to use one of my 2" bars in the adapter. It fit but the pin I had to get to col it in was too big for the hole in the bar. Will have to get the proper size bolt to hold it in because the original pin is too short.

I upgraded to a 2 1/2" receiver. I had to get a new receiver anyway, I needed a longer drop due to the new truck being so much taller than my old 2003.

One thing to watch when using the sleeve though is if you are pulling heavy trailers it changes the shear forces on the pin and mine bent and as well it pounded out the holes on the trucks reciever, elongated the holes and mushroomed it to the point when the burr was bad enough that I had to use a sledge hammer to get the draw bar out of the reciever. I then had to rebuild the reciever hole by welding it in and die grinding it back to the prefect size. I kept the hole on the small side to make it a tighter fit with the pin now for less slop and with no slop it won't get the forward/backwards movement to do the pounding any more. I welded the sleeve right onto the drawbar and built up the hole there as well and die ground it as well to get the pin tight.
So bottom line is the sleeves are in my opinion and experience a bad idea if you're pulling any significant weight.
I went through this trouble because the particular drawbar is an $1,800.00 air ride one, not replacing that just because the new truck has a 2 1/2" reciever.

Badunit,
what kind of hitch bar did you get. I just got a 2016 2500 CTD and need to get a hitch bar with more drop for my TT. I thought about just getting the 2 1/2" since I have to get one anyway. The reese one I have now doesn't have enough drop and is very sloppy in the adapter.

Thanks
