This is the e-mail I got yesterday. I cleaned it of personal info.

That helps. Made me go look at my account. Apparently I am already past my expiration date for the trial but there are 4 more years to go on Via Mobile. So I guess I'll wait 4 years and ask again then if it hasn't been answered already. Thanks.

Yep, no WiFi hot spot! Snoking

Interestingly I just learned how to enable text and emails if the alarm is tripped on the RAM. System had my email address from when the sales lady helped set it up, however the theft alert was not activated. This is done in the Uconnect apps in your smart phone. I received a text to reply to(yes) finish the setup. If one is going to extend this service and pay the fee, then they should learn what it will do and set it up correctly. More home work is in order! Cherry is the most complex woman I have ever been with!

SNOKING

I'm working through all of this now too. I consider myself fairly tech savvy and definitely auto tech savvy (spent my life in the business of European auto repair) but this truck is making me work! Love the feature set though and it is some of the best I've used!

1) I have a so-called smart phone.......drum roll here, I need a different phone for it to work with this.
2) You almost need a PHD to understand the Users Guide and or how to operate the U-Connect system.

All I can say is that yes my 2015 has the WiFii hot spot, however it cost extra(per month) to have it activated, including during the 1 year included Uconnect service included with the Laramie trim package. With our smart phones already have the hot spot feature, so I see no reason to pay to have the truck do this also.

But is it activated?
It is a separate fee from the Uconnect subscription.

What he said ^^^^^! SNOKING

It is a solution feature looking for a problem that seldom occurs!

Say you have a Wifi only table or laptop that you want to connect to the internet while in the truck, and your smart phone does not have the hot spot feature. So if you are willing to pay the monthly fee, you can get to the internet via the RAM! I believe it is only the slower 3G service.

I think it could be advantageous if you did have a need to frequently use a wifi only device, as usage is unlimited. I certainly don't have a need for it however.

I have a so called smart phone. You charge the battery over night. You log on to the internet with it and the battery is down to less than 40% charge when you get your g-mail crap. (need to have a g-mail account for the Android Operating system).
According to what comes up on my Uconnect 8.4/8.4 NAV the wifi is included with it.

I really have no use for it. And for $149.00 a year, I can buy at least one or two nice dinners in a Steak House.(of course that's being a cheap SOB and not leaving a tip)

Does the Wifi have its own data and if so is there a limit? If the data is unlimited it might be a better deal that my phone, especially if you are streaming music all day while driving and then streaming a movie or surfing the web at night in the truck camper.

From Uconnect web site:

TURN YOUR VEHICLE INTO A 3G Wi-Fi HOTSPOT
Add a 3G Wi-Fi Hotspot subscription+ to your trial or package to get Wi-Fi + 3G connectivity on demand. You can make your purchase from the Uconnect® Store+ on your touchscreen or at Mopar® Owner Connect. Just make sure you’ve registered for Uconnect Access+ and have set up a Uconnect Payment PIN. After you've made your purchase, turn on your signal and connect your devices. With 3G Wi-Fi Hotspot, your passengers can shop, surf the Web, check emails and stay connected wirelessly on their personal devices.

3G Wi-Fi HOTSPOT SUBSCRIPTIONS+ (Extra charges apply.)
$9.99/Day $19.99/Week $34.99/Month

Thanks SNOKING but I'm still not clear on whether this package comes with its own data plan and if so how much data. For that much money I would think it should have its own data but I can't seem to find how many GB this would include. Guess I can call them.

According to what I'm reading on my account, which is same as what SNOKING put up, there is no data limit, just time. Does make you think about it depending on how much your in the truck, especially if you are running a plan with a data limit on your phone. It is only at 3G speeds however which will be a limiting factor. It is also on the Sprint network of which I have a phone through and sucks, especially for out west I've noticed when we go snowmobiling. LTE coverage has improved, but Sprint is still focused on the east more than the west it seems. Maybe a software update sometime will also change it to LTE capable?

I like the Advantage package for the remote start, lock/unlock features, theft alerts and locating.

I started researching remote starters prior to my 2016 purchase, and a good one will run you well over $500, plus if you want phone capability and locating you have to upgrade to the Drone system, which then requires more $$$ as well as a monthly fee. For a program from Drone equivalent to what the stock Advantage offers is...$120/yr. right now. I'll pay an extra $30/yr for integrated built in system, of course until the price changes.

As far as the Via Mobile it's nice that they give you 5 yrs. but why should I have to pay for my truck to use my phones data? I don't understand that one, probably my lack of knowledge on the system as I've had the truck a month.

While I'm not 100% certain, I don't think you can use your phone's hotspot to connect your radio to the internet. I believe the best you can do is use the "Via Mobile" apps that the radio is already programmed with (Pandora, iheartradio, Aha etc), which uses your phone for internet access. Basically "Via Mobile" lets you control those few apps that are on your phone, with your Uconnect screen.
