UDC PRO [Smarty] custom tuning & John [ah64id]

When the young bucks tell me that a Detroit is a series 60, i sit em down and show them this video.

The buzzin dozen was not uncommon out here for the LA to Denver run. Also a favorite at the shows..

Thanks everyone for not telling me that my ideas aren't completely absurd most other people would've by now and I hadn't even thought of the 16 cylinder detroits ( 16v-71 or the 16v-92 ). Because I didn't think they would fit in a M 939 5 ton without heavy modifications to the chassis and engine compartment not to mention the added weight ? But what would have to be done if someone was to do that ? Thanks in advance for any thoughts, opinions, and answers.

I would have to say it would depend on your funding, most anything is possible but that always comes to mind.. Like the K owners say, "If you own a K your gonna pay" !

The O&K cranes the dept had used two Cummins K's I didnt wrench on them but I was always nearby when they were apart.

Well now that we're on different engines for show and tell, here a couple of pics of a John Deer. Who makes this, it's a water pump engine for fire sprinkler system back up.

The last pic looks like someone went to Home Depot, sprayed it down with some red paint, and stuck the price stickers back on lol!!

I orginally was looking for a high cubic inch / high performance diesel engine for a 5 ton military truck and was especially interested in the older 2 stroke Detroit Diesel engines but considering the added weight of these engines and the limited performance gains over the 5 ton trucks 200-250 Horsepower and that the smaller 5.9 L 6BT Cummins which can relatively easily be bumped up to 500-1000 Horsepower I don't really know a whole lot about the Detroit Diesels I've drove one and really liked it but am completely unaware of how to increase its performance. Thanks in advance for any thoughts, opinions, and answers.

I really think you're better off with the more modern 4 cycle engines. I don't think the 2 strokes can run with them as easily. Stick a full tilt 855 in there and call it done.

A while back there was a discussion on squeezing horsepower out of a B 5.9 and it being par with a big block engine. You may want to look for it. Good discussion.

I've been doing a little very non scientific research using data from the barrington diesel club http://www.barringtondieselclub.co.za/index.html comparing stock/factory engine specifications I mainly looked at the CAT C13, CAT C15, Big Cam Cummins, KTA 19 Cummins, L10 Cummins, KT1150 Cummins, 8v-71 Detroit Diesel, 12v-71 Detroit Diesel, 16v-71 Detroit Diesel, 16v-92 Detroit Diesel, Series 60 Detroit Diesel, and the 4000 MBE Detroit Diesel,( I realize that I didn't research the International DT466, and many other well regarded engines but I was trying to do an apples to apples comparison and didn't find enough information on these engines.) I took the engine weight divided by the horsepower level to get the horsepower per pound and then took the engine weight divided by the torque level to get the ft.lb torque per pound and the CAT C13 looked the best in efficiency as well as the engine size in relation to the size of engines that would 'fit' in a 5 Ton military truck. Thanks in advance for any thoughts, opinions, and answers.

Also gotta consider cost. Cats ain't the cheapest to own/maintain. No idea about high horsepower applications.

The CAT C13 as in of the last on road series they put out? If yes, then you really need to examine the emission package on that engine! I agree that CATs are expensive in any aspect. An older 3406? Heck yea. Thatll work.

The company I work for had a couple of T-800 KW's with C-13 and Allison auto that were pushing 485HP into rear ends with 5.39 gears. They would get after it pretty quick and even spin the tires with an empty tanker when you stood on the skinny peddle!! I was more than impressed with the power, but the engine brake just makes noise and had very little effect and just sucks!! As far as physical size, It should fit like a glove and engine brake should be more than enough for what you are doing with it.

The main problem with the Cat is the fact that was designed to meet emissions and it might be a problem with finding a way to tune it run without the junk (EGR & DPF). If you can find someone that can program the ECM to run without emissions, you would be set!!
