Greetings, I'm broke down in Durant, OK, about 4,000 miles from home pulling a 40' gooseneck trailer. About 50 miles north of here, hit a patch of bumpy road and "Blackie" (my 99 Dodge 3500 4WD dually 5.9 spit a Check Gauge Light, alternator was about 11V. I pulled over, messed with the alternator wires, heard a slight load hit the engine, got back in and it was up to about 12.8V. Went to nearest auto parts, replaced alternator, on start-up it showed 13V but after about 5 minutes it dropped down into the 11s. The Edge CTS2 showed a P1682 which I cleared, and it immediately showed up again. I drove to the NAPA in Durant and caught them right at closing time, messed with wires again and got the engine load and jump up to 13V. Asked NAPA to load check it, and not charging. Could not duplicate the load again. Pulled plug, stripped back about 6 inches and short of stripping the wire couldn't find any breaks. I'm going to salvage yard in the AM to get a harness or at least a plug. Any ideas would be appreciated, I need to be back in AK by the 18th or Momma will kill me. Thanks in advance. Oh, and of course, I forgot my multimeter....

How are the batteries ? did you load test them? A bad battery could be an issue. Smart with changing harness out . Not sure if your year has temp sensor at batteries. A bad cell could cause battery to heat up shutting down charging.

Batteries are 10 month old Interstates. It does have the temp sensor. Load test was OK except now I've run the batteries down. Currently sitting at alternator shop hooked to a charger. I'll update once we're able to test.

Update. Plug was not the problem. Believe it is PCM. Wired external reg on alternator now rolling with 14V thanks to Marty Scheim at Start Rite in Durant. I'm
