So here's my situation. I'm the original owner of a 2004.5 CA truck which currently has about 34k on the odometer. I took it to be smogged last month and it failed for 2 incomplete readiness monitors, Fuel & Comprehensive Components. I did some research and found there is a TSB for this issue, so off to the dealer I go and have the ECM flashed as well as some other recalls performed (Truck hasn't been to the dealer for about 8 years). Somehow the dealer fried the FCM during this process which took about a week to get authorization to repair. I have been driving the truck for about a 2 weeks and logged about 300 miles on the odometer both city and highway driving but the readiness monitors still have not completed. The paperwork from the dealer states the flash was performed, but how do I confirm? I'm not sure how long it should take or if the dealer can make the monitors complete. Can anyone suggest what I should do next?

Friend of mine in Commiefornia had the same problem. Took it to a Stealership and they turned on the two montitors that DIDNT DO ANYTHING TO BEGIN with and charged him some bucks. Took it back to smog pros and BINGO IT PASSED.

Commiefornia just wants in your wallet.

GMoss I just sent this to you also:
It's not a recall, it's a warranty extension that covers the flash forever, except for California vehicles that are covered by recall K01. If your truck will not pass an emissions test for OBDII compliance, or a state IM test you are entitled to the flash that will correct the problem. If your state does not require a test, or the test does not require hooking up to the OBDII diagnostic port there is no need to get the flash. Remember, each flash includes all the updates since the last flash(es) so this flash may do more than just fix this problem depending on when the last time your truck was flashed.
See TSB 18-017-10 for complete details if your still on the fence. CA trucks will not be able to renew registration without getting the recall flash.
HINT-if you do not have high idle enabled and you get the flash, be sure to return immediately to have it re-enabled.

Ok, I'm good with the ECM warranty. The dealer didn't charge me for the flash. I called and spoke with the same service manager today about bringing the truck back in to troubleshoot why the monitors still have not completed, she replied "there's nothing else we can do just drive the truck until they complete, may take 1500 miles". I don't have much confidence in this service department so the truck is going to a different dealership tomorrow.

Any freinds with a smarty that is up to date can take care ofit faster than the dealer. The oem hardware is no longer supported and manydealers are having issues doing the flash

Bob4x4,
The dealer performed the ECM flash. Are you saying I should do it again myself with a SMARTY programmer? Is the software different than the dealer used?

I have seen cases where the ecm will not run the monitors after doing the flash.FCA says to replace the ECM.The Smarty has come through with out having to replace the ecm.

Well I took the truck to another dealership today and they verified the ECM had the latest software. The service advisor said there was nothing else they could do and gave me the number for the BAR referee. I have an appointment in 2 weeks. I'll post back with the outcome.

At that point the dealer should replace the ecm,if they have any doubt they can contact the star center or there DM

GMOSS here is the thread I wanted you to read . If you have time read it all or just read post 75 and 77 for the Cliff notes

I reread the thread you provided a link to and tigerdrvr's truck situation is a little different than mine. He had a 05 Federal truck which was being tested as a CA truck. According to the BAR Smog check OBD reference document dated 3-11-16 his truck now does not require Misfire or Comprehensive Component monitor to be ready. Sadly my 04.5 CA truck would probably have passed the smog check if the Fuel monitor had been complete. The ECM flash was only supposed to correct the Comprehensive Component monitor not completing.

UPDATE: The truck now has 1200 miles since the flash and the Fuel & Comp monitors still have not completed. I took the truck to the BAR Referee and he failed it for more than one monitor not complete. He was pretty nice guy but said his hands were tied and I would have to provide documented proof from the dealership that they had tried to diagnose the problem and notified the factory of the situation. So back to the dealer I go. The service writer had the diesel smog tech come out and talk to me. His response to my problems was to type up a work order basically stating everything that can be done has been done at this point and it may take up to 10K miles for the readiness monitors to complete. Which should allow me to get a 1 time waiver for 2 years until the next smog. Problem is I barely drive this truck 2K miles a year and I have very little confidence at this point the monitors will ever complete. Shouldn't be possible to get into the ECM programming to determine why the monitors are not completing? Both dealers seem unable/unwilling to troubleshoot. Maybe it has more to do with manufacturer support than the dealership ($$$).

I would drive into the dealer and talk to the service manager and tell him you want the district service manager involved in this.

Everything has not been done-they have NOT replaced the ecm.Have them run a function 14 it will show the ecm has a lifetime warranty for this very reason

Thanks for the advice. I'm going back to the dealer next week to speak to the service manager and get the Chysler rep involved. What is a function 14?

It will show you your warranty coverage among other things. If your truck is a cali truck, not a federal with a carb build it will tell you

Passed Smog!!!

Readiness monitors are complete and my truck passed the smog test.
The dealer that originally flashed the ECM on my truck apparently loaded the wrong software. When I took it to the second dealer to verify flash was performed the service advisor plugged in his tablet into the OBDII port and it reported that the ECM had the latest software. Today after talking to the service manager he had a service technician check it again with different equipment (STAR?) and found there was an update available. He flashed the truck and all monitors set within 10 miles of driving. If I had taken Bob4x4's advice and used a SMARTY to flash the ECM myself I could have probably solved my problem 3 weeks ago! Live and Learn.......Just happy it's over.

A big Thank You to p-Bar and Bob4x4 for your help.:)
