Just got a 2014 ram crew cab 3500 st/tradesman traded in a 2006 ram 3500 maxi cab srw. the problem I have is the truck had 33 in tires on it that looked great but the wife and I are older and getting in and out of the truck was hard to do, the dealer put different wheels and new tires on for me. I was looking at them for air pressure and the are LT265/70R17. 17 in wheels not 18 is this going to be a problem?

I would have stayed you the 18" and worked on the steps/nerf bars. SNOKING

That was helpful.

Same pressure, just a little less wt capacity. 17 inch wheels served everyone just fine for the whole 3rd gen line of trucks and they're still the base line wheel. The 18s you traded are an upgrade. You'll be fine.

Thanks for the answer SNOKING I do have nerf bars but wife and I are close to 70 so its a little harder to get in with the 33 in tires on, 5 years ago I would have hade them put on 33s but I was younger then.
jhenderson I will be towing a 40ft 5th wheel 16500lbs so I think I should be ok
again thanks for the info

Close to 70. Darn you young kidds, both DW and I are in our 70's (75 and 72)!

Pony up the money for them swanky Amp steps. As soon as I'm out of the broke stage, there will be a set of Amp Steps on my truck.

The reason for the 18s is weight capacity. They are rated 3640 lb each, and the rear diff is rated 7000 lb. You will lose significant capacity with 17s. My wife and I like the wheel to wheel side steps much better than the other type Ram offers because they sit lower and give a good intermediate step.

The wrong wheel and tire combination will throw the speedo off, as well.

I was under the impression that the steel 17 inch rims have the same weight capacity as the steel 18 inch rims? Can you point me to a source that says otherwise? I have the chrome-covered steel rims.

Or is the weight rating stamped somewhere into the rim?

well I think I will be ok for now I tow 16500 5th wheel in the summer only for about 2 or 300 miles a trip this summer. Next year wife and I plan on more traveling so I guess I will have to find some 18" wheels or wheels and tires

Go back and see if the dealer still has the 18" rims and tires. They should have not de-rated the truck by installing tires that do not match the weights listed on the tire placard. They could be trouble if you have a problem.

Be nice, tell them that together you made a mistake installing tires rated below the door sticker and think that it needs to be rectified.

Trust me that these trucks are so heavy ready to tow that you need tires that are rated for the 7 RGAWR.

SNOKING

no they don't have them the original owner put a lift kin and 33" tires on and desposed on the 18s so Ill have to look for some

Put the word out at local tire shops and dealerships that you are looking for some factory takeoffs. I was at the tire store the other day and ran into a man that was putting Laramie rims on his 07 dually and he was glad to let me have his takeoff steel rims.

Found a stock set of wheels and tires went to the dealer to get speedo corrected and sold the other wheels and tires to a dealer employee. thanks for the help and ideas.
