Just wondering if there is a way to pull codes on fourth Gen trucks without external device and if not what is the best way to go.

I have one of these from Amazon. Works well. I've not needed it for my truck, but have helped others. It will clear codes too.

The key cycling (on/off) which flashes the code on the odometer doesn't seem to work on mine.

I bought a cheap one from harbor freight tools.
