Yes it's in the latest 7th edition diesel supplement for all year ecodiesels.

We recommend you use 5W-40 synthetic engine oil such
as MOPAR or Shell Rotella that meets FCA Material
Standard MS-10902 and the API CJ-4 or ACEA E9/E7 or
ACEA A3/B4 engine oil category is required.

That makes life easier. Is that in addition to the current spec or does it replace it. Any speculation as to why they would change ?

Sounds like it replaces the existing spec. since the old spec is no longer listed, but the new spec. says "recommended" so it hard to say.

The new TSB with the change to 5w40 oil will make oil changes about 1/2 as expensive. Good news for the EcoDiesel audience.

Giro, send the dealer a link to this page.

The topic of "why the change" has been voiced by several that have called into the TDR offices. I'll call lube oil Guru , John Martin and see if he can shed some light.

In the meantime, I'm thinking the quest for fuel economy might have gone too far: Recommended reading for the full story---TDR # 84, pages 124-127.c

On the 16 FCA pays to change the oil(not the filter) and will reset the oil change reminder unless it is under 500 miles IIRC

So with this change I will be able to use 5-40 Synthetic for both of my Rams 1500 and 3500 makes life so much simpler.

TSB plainly states, software release: "Revised oil change interval." It is anyone's guess as to the meaning of the statement.

If you look at the TSB note that it only applies to 2016 MY trucks. I have to assume that a TSB will be coming for earlier year trucks, but until one is released it looks only to apply to 2016. That being said If I owned one I would probably change to the 5w-40.

Leave it to sag2 to read the fine print that wasn't really fine print. The TSB does say for MY2016.

Perhaps, as your editor I've jumped the gun. The last thing I would do would be to mislead you.

Stay tuned for further details.

My gut still tells me the 2015 and older will get the same change eventually. I just took the VM engine class and they didn't say anything about any major hardware changes for 16, so it would make sense if the earlier engines get the new oil also.
OK, I just compared major engine parts for 14 and 16. Almost all the parts fit 2011-2016. Cams are different for 15 up but with emissions changes I would expect that. If it were my ED I would still say run the 5w-40 Synthetic.
