96 12valve, pulled into a dominoes and there was a puddle under the truck. CRAP!

its fuel. CRAP CRAP.

started truck, its spraying from the middle of a rubber hose, must have a hole in it.

viewed from the engine bay, through a small two inch viewing triangle. The small viewing window is between the relay on the firewall, and the brake booster. If I kneel on the bumper and lean in, and look between the relay and booster, I can see a rubber hose angling from behind the fuel filter area heading down and back. That is the hose that is leaking.

spraying like a cut artery when truck is started, then turns to a mist. Don't know if the pressure makes it a mist or the engine fan.

there are two hoses there, this one and s closest to the engine block when it passes through a brace just behind the filter.

truck runs fine.

is this a roadside fix?

thank you.

As I'm sure you have determined by now it could be done in a parking lot, but not easily. From you description the hose that is leaking is the fuel return to the tank, so the pressure is minimal. Flow varies according to throttle setting. Since that hose has failed it would be a good idea to replace the supply hose to the lift pump while you are there.

If it's the 2 hoses I'm thinking about, the supply and return going from the frame to the engine, you'll probably have to get them from underneath the truck. It's a bit messy, but easily accessible.

Did you get the truck home or is it still sitting in the parking lot?

I replaced and re-routed my return line several years ago in a parking lot with some 5/16" hose, 4 clamps, and basic tools in @ 30 minutes and she's still going strong.

I removed the overflow valve and broke the return line off at the bracket by pushing it back and forth, then cut it off sqare and cleaned it up. Then I flipped it over, reinstalled the over flow valve, and slid the new hose on and put two clamps on it. Then got under the truck and reached up as far as I could and cut the rubber line. Then I disconnected the steel line at the quick connect fitting, cut the steel line close to where the original rubber hose is connected, cleaned off the burrs, slid the new hose on and double clamped that end. Then reconnect the steel lines and drive on. Haven't had any problems.

If you don't want to do Scott's mod, the return line clamps are easier to get to if you remove the fuel filter. The rest I did from under the truck.

Update. Made it home, but my fuel tank level dropped considerably.

Finally, and i mean finally after much searching found fuel hose with diesel rating. No one has it, wow.

Will take the hose home tonight to fix, hopefully, the truck.

Dealerships, tractor supply, oreilly, autozone, no one had it.

Just 10 min ago found some gates J30r14 hose!

I also had a hard time sourcing it locally. I tried some of the local marines with no luck. I found a few suppliers online, but they had a minimum order of 100' and with 2 different sizes, several hundred dollars. I just waited for the order from either Larry B's or Geno's. (Can't remember exactly). Mine weren't leaking yet and were replaced as a preventative measure, so I could afford to wait for a mail order. I can certainly understand your frustration in sourcing those lines in an emergency.

When you're finally done, it probably wouldn't hurt to check that both lines are free of any obstructions. Occasionally they'll rub against the firewall or some other component and with the vibration wear through. A lot of guys will wrap the hoses with another hose split lengthwise, such as old heater or garden hose. You'll have a pretty good idea and picture once you replace the hoses.

I guess you'll know your thumb will get a work out priming the fuel system.

Good luck with your repairs. A bit messy but definitely not difficult.

Truck engine running, just need to replace plastic fender liner and wheel.

Whew. *I cant imagine doing that without this access hole. Look, the starter is right there. Fuel strainer. Lift pump. Fuel filter above. *Perfect access hole.
