Hello again gentlemen

Craigslist Ad for Demon Possessed Van

We're rehabbing our living room which has a concrete floor that is somewhat irregular. We're going from carpet to a floating floor and I need to grind some high spots and rough areas. Anyone have any advice on operating a 10 inch concrete floor grinder?

You'll want some type of filtration if available. You'll be vacuuming dust for days after; even with a filter.

Thanks for bringing it up. The unit I'm renting has an adapter for a shop vac. I also intend to cover the doorway in plastic and run a high output fan in a French door for use as a dust ejector. I'm just hoping not to fowl things up and make a poor floor unusable.

I know how much dust I created when I re-finished our hardwood floors. I still find dust here and there. It was worth it though

I just want through this in our finished basement and looking back the best advice I could give would be to get some quotes and see what it will cost to have professionally done. With a grinder there will still be high and low spots which will show up when you lay the floating floor and the dust is horrendous, a basic shop vac will clog the filter so fast its not even funny. Water in the bottom of the vac is a good idea but I think you will still be replacing filters like crazy then spend hours cleaning up the dust from the entire house no matter how well you attempt to seal it in.

I finished the job this afternoon. All went well. 400sq ft. It was work but well worth it. It's my living room not a finished basement. I cleaned the shop vac filter about a dozen times and nearly filled a 5 gal bucket with concrete dust. I ground off some high spots and got things close to level using a long straight edge. I couldn't use leveling compound because the whole room is pitched almost 1.25 inches corner to corner. Leveling compound coverage is 1 bag per 30sq ft at 1/8 inch depth. That would require a pallet of leveling compound. We're putting down vinyl plank flooring with a 3/8 combo vapor and silencer pad. It might not meet some folks standards but it suits my wife and I just fine. Thanks everyone for all the advice, it was much appreciated.
