I have talked to three different fellows in the past three weeks that own 2nd Gen Dodge trucks, two were 1500's and one was a 2500 CTD, that have had their air bags deploy on their own. All three said that their air bag light was on at the time which to me indicates a problem.

I have thought about this before since mine are now 18 years old. My air bag light is not on, but I don't want to take a chance on these things going off, especially while I'm driving.

What do y'all think about just taking them out?

Check to see if the airbag in your truck is a Takata. If it is, it should have been included in the recall. Here is a link to Consumer's Union concerning the air bag:

The recall only goes back to 2003, but I can't believe that is the first year that Takata used cheap and potentially unstable inflators in its air bags. If my understanding of the problem with these bags is correct, it would not cause a warning light to come on.

With those kinda odds, you should run out and buy a lottery ticket right now.....

I've had some pretty hard front end impacts and never had one deploy I've wondered what it takes to make one come out

I cant state for sure on these trucks but I've always understood that a 30 mph impact was required in order to trigger airbag deployment. Well.....that being for the front airbags.

I can tell you that when I got rear ended @ 45mph the bags did not deploy in our 2000 Trooper that incurred $13K in repairs. The driver's side seat partially pulled the anchor bolts out
I even got pushed into a BMW and that didn't do it.
Honda replaced both of ours on the Pilot. Hopefully,Dodge will come up with the passenger side replacement soon. My driver's side one was done recently.

I meant 30 mph "frontal" impact. You got rear ended which shouldn't trigger your front airbags unless you were thrown into another object at over 30 mph. At least thats the way I understood it, but I could very well be wrong. :)
