Be Careful on the Road - Look Out for the Other Guy!

Vehicle Purchase / Buying American / Frustration

I've had a cell phone for 5 or 10 years now (wife 20+)
I haven't had a smart phone (internet, texting etc) until this last year.
I was born in 1963. Things have REALLY changed.

I think ALL of you have missed the biggest problem here... these kids VOTE!
It's just going to get more interesting as time marches on.

Kind of figured that THIS IDEA would be brought up as it has in almost all of our presentations in Utah, Idaho, N & S Dakota and most recently Indiana. People seem to think their opinion is the ONLY one that matters. Animal Rights Activists are MOSTLY of these two generations, hence they KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT EVERYTHING and make stupid assumptions with unsubstantiated information, even when folks with Doctorates prove what they think is wrong they dismiss it because they don't like what's said but have no proof that their ideas are right OR wrong.

Several made a comment in UT & IN that it wont be long before WE have all the guns taken away!! I try in my presentation not to get political, just present the facts as an uneducated guy that takes pictures and sees FIRST HAND how things work IN MY OPINION in REAL LIFE. The educated ideas and thoughts of some people that hold degrees in Biology that had to cost some pretty big money present the facts as THEY SEE THEM. Be Dammed the two ideas run very close to the same way of thinking.

Towards the end of the presentations I have a ton of pictures shown of BOTH sides of the Wolf Problems if they are Problems, it depends what side of the fence your xxx is on as to which way you think. I have a friends Daughter help out with some of the music that we play while the picture show is given.

Like mentioned before I don't want or like to get political but when someone said the they are going to have all the guns taken away, I gave them a song that could make them think twice. I presented the song as MY OWN IDEA & has nothing to do with the real purpose of the presentation.

But if they think that they are going to VOTE my Right away THINK AGAIN!!

Funny, I'm often impressed by the young gals and guys that run the local Dutch Bros coffee drive through I regularly hit. They pretty much do all the math in their heads and change too. Even if its like 5 different drinks.

There are a lot of old (and young) people that can't do math.....

And this is the other side of the coin. My 8th grader is doing math that I didn't take until either my sophomore or junior year in highschool and I was always in the advanced math programs.

Sometimes when I look at his school work it feels like I've been out of school alot longer than 18 years.

Kids should learn both: precision and accuracy, and ballpark; there're places for each. When you go food shopping with exactly $80, it's very helpful to be able to approximate the price of what's in your cart. When travelling cross country, it's helpful to have an idea how far you can go before you need to refuel which will also tell you about where you'll be when you need fuel. When computing a tip, take the total, shift the decimal place to the left one place, add about half that again, then round up: close enough to 15% plus a little. For most everyday living, ballpark math is good enough.

But for many other things, accuracy and precision are paramount. Construction engineering relies on exacting math (well, outside of graft and corruption). Retail sales/change must be accurate. Band counts and bacteria counts per unit area or per unit volume must be accurate for doctors to make accurate diagnoses.

I taught myself ballpark math back in grade school and use it most of the time, and I use accurate and precise math when and where it's needed. It's useless to me to know that my '98 gets 19.6349586736294 miles per gallon. But it's good to know that I can travel about 600 miles before I'll need to refuel; from here, that would put be in Ann Arbor or north of Indy.

I guess it really comes down to how accurate computations need to be and how precise (number of decimal places) they need to be. And kids should learn both ways.

Gail is the Math "Go to guy" in our family. Our Son was having trouble with math, Gail spent every spare minute with him. His test scores were NOT good. Gail rechecked his calculations & was VERY PO ed because they were correct. He went to a parent night at school, when he walked in the instructor said that he's been waiting for Gail. Gail said SHOW ME WHERE HIS ANSWERS ARE WRONG!! The instructor said their not wrong. Gail furious said then why are you marking them wrong? He said that it's the WAY he found the answer. They were trying to prepare Nathan for a higher math level & figuring out the way he was it's harder to do. Gail said PROVE IT! The instructor put several problems on a chalk board. Gail went through them with no hesitation & said that when he moves up to this SO CALLED NEW MATH he'll show him how the OLD WAY HAD BEEN WORKING FROM SINCE THE CHINKS INVENTED THE ABACUS. Everything would have been fine execpt the instructor was Chinese!!

Is he learning the " new math" that teaches close is good enough, or does he have to get the answer right?

I'm guessing you would be content with your kids learning to the same level as you or I did. In our school system, my 13 year old would be close to graduating compared to where I was when I graduated.

Math is one subject I'm all for them learning as much as they're capable of. Math is universal. Regardless of what you do in life you will always use it.
I'm a fitter by trade so I've been using basic math almost daily for the last 18 years. My son can add and subtract fractions in his head almost as well as I can and I've been at it longer than he's been alive. I'm more than ok with that regardless of how he gets the answer.

Penny said that she posted in this & for that I'm sorry.*

JR I think the point that was trying to be made was that 1+1=2 will always be even if you go about finding 2 by another method.*

Hey pard, my post was not directed at either of you.

You hit the nail on the head with that comment BIG. I see alot of the same math being taught differently. If there's been an easier shorter way to figure something out compared to what I learned 20 years ago I have no issues with that.

My issue with the new math, is when you have one designated teacher, teaching the other teachers how to teach it, and there were heated arguments during this session. I know because I was the perverbial fly on the wall while I was working on their AC system.

My perception of this is propaganda, pushing the new math on the teachers that think it's stupid. Another way to put it is in this hypotheical equation that I can see in the near future. Question: How many democrats that are write, does it take to convince one republican that he/it/she/unisex/don't know the sex, is wrong?

A little off subject but while we (im) jumping the xxxx on the young people of the world

What about this BULLYING BULL XXXX Get over it. I was bullied go figure a taller than average kid with the name of GAIL!!! think that I didn't get bullied????

I couldn't careless what anyone said, but where I drew the line is when it went to ANYTHING physical The instant someone touched me I went after them like a Starving Blind Pit Bull in a meat locker.

Did the bullying Stop???? DAMN RIGHT IT DID!!!

Today its all about BEING SENSITIVE to that I say HORSE XXXX

was watching TV (im sick in bed) and a commercial came on about bullying. The ones that are belly aching about being bullied seem to look about a year from graduating High School for Christ sake. If I had such a sensitive disposition at that age I think that running to Canada or Joining Muhammad Ali in prison would have been a critical decision a year later, think that the Military has a problem with BULLYING?

OH WAIT THE ARMY HAS TIME OUTS NOW IF THE DRILL INSTRUCTOR BECOMES A BULLIE.

ARE YOU FRIGGING KIDDING ME!!!

we have become a country of Sissy La La's
