With only 7,700 miles on the vehicle, yesterday afternoon the MIL came on. How does one check for the error code without a scanner? The truck is only 7months old, and has already had its first service (oil, filter and fuel filters). All gauges were normal, and performance was normal. Have parked the vehicle and very curious as to what caused this to happen. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks n advance.

As far as I know, you'll need a code reader. Maybe your local auto part store can do that for you. Then search the Internet as to what test code means.

Just go autozone or any other shop...they'll tell you for free. (Why did you have service so early- Ram says 1 year or 10k miles...just asking this quickie as I have new 3500 at 4000 miles)

Do not know what you are reading?

RAM says 6 months or 15K for oil and filter, which ever occurs first. 15K for fuel filters. Some like to do the first oil change around 4-5K, which I did.

Replace the engine oil and oil filter every 15,000 miles
(24 000 km) or six months, or sooner if prompted by the
oil change indicator system. Under no circumstances
should oil change intervals exceed 15,000 miles
(24 000 km) or six months, whichever comes first.
NOTE:
• Under no circumstances should oil change intervals
exceed 15,000 miles (24,000 km) or six months or
500 Hours, whichever comes first.

To me the Six Months sucks!

We put 1400 miles on our truck in the first 48 hours of ownership.

The dealer I purchased the truck from offered the first oil change for "free", and since we were going south for the winter, I elected to have the first service done prior to leaving. I knew that we would be gone when it was time for the service, and do not know if we would ever be in the psition to have the service done there. So, it was a decision to take advantage of the service that was built into our purchase price. In the future, I will wait for the time or mileage to require the service. So far, I am very satisfied with the performance of the truck, but this MIL or Check Engine Light has me concerned.

I had a MIL rear it's ugly head (Go on! I set it up for ya!) within the first week of ownership on my '16 3500. Yeah, freaked me out. I put it in tow/haul and ran the exhaust brake on auto, and kept it that way ever since. It cleared itself within a day or two... tip learned from this forum.

I've talked to others who have had it come on and stay on. Not flashing, just a constant on. After a trip to the dealership and the latest flash update, seems common to hear that the tech will be able to tell you the code but will usually reach a dead end in their troubleshooting. From reading the owners manual it sounds like any minor hiccup with the engine or transmission and anywhere in between will throw a MIL. If it's constant on and performance isn't noticeably affected via gauges or otherwise, I'd still drive it if I had to (with caution and keep an eye on it). But, make an appt with the service dept at your stealership as soon as you can. If it's flashing, I'd park it and have it towed to the stealership for diagnosis.

I don't think there's any way to get a code to appear with the new keyless, fobbed rams. You used to be able to cycle the key and get the codes to show up. As far as I've been able to tell and as mentioned already, not the case anymore and a reader/scanner is now required. Also as already mentioned, should be able to have it read at an auto parts store like Auto Zone or Advanced for cheap or free.

Good luck. Hopefully it'll be nothing.

Thank you for the info, and I won't take advantage of the soft ball this time. Have an appointment for tomorrow morning, and hopefully will get this straightened out. The truck has performed up to my expectations so far, and hopefully this experience will not have an effect on that opinion. Thanks again.

That would be partly correct if you had a Hemi..........12 months is correct but its 10,000 miles with a Hemi not a Cummins diesel. 2016 Diesel is still.......15,000 miles or six months or
500 Hours, whichever comes first. The owners manual is confusing.

From the 2016 Diesel supplement.

Replace the engine oil and oil filter every 15,000 miles(24 000 km) or six months, or sooner if prompted by the oil change indicator system. Under no circumstancesshould oil change intervals exceed 15,000 miles (24000 km) or six months, whichever comes first.

I do not think you are looking at the right place. Show us where you found your numbers. SNOKING

All appears to be "good to go" for the time being. The scan showed a "P218F" error code, which the service writer stated did not refer to anything? They performed five PCM updates (which took all day), and the MIL is now out. Contemplating purchasing the code reader previously recommended, but will probably wait to see what happens going forward. I think the honeymoon is over, but at least it appears that we have a vehicle now. Thanks.

A PCM update was released in May thst addressed your P218f error code. I imagine that's one of the five PCM updates you got yesterday.
