I am about to embark on my first 6 mo service. I've watched you tube oil changes ( both ways ) and the needle zert in front drive line grease. Where else should I be looking for grease points? Ball joints? Tie rods ? Other places not so obvious?
I believe I have all the correct tools ( genos)
7000 mi on truck
actually looking forward to this as this site,YouTube, genos & a few other forums have helped immensely.

Thank you for your time

Front driveshaft is about it.........none of the ball joints or tie rod ends have grease fittings any more and the u-joints are all sealed.

ONLY grease point is the front driveshaft. Make sure you see grease coming out back side of joint. Let us know how all went and what method you chose to do the oil change.

If you have not read this please do. "EASY! 2013 up oil change"

Thanks, I'm first gonna try through the side method first. I figure tire rotation will help with side access & access to the needle zert. If I run into trouble I will revert to your method. I bought the genos filter cap , their socket style filter wrench. Also am changing the drain plug to the type that uses a hose for draining. Very nice job on your oil change post,

cheers

The only problem I have heard going thru the fender is some guys say there is not enough room to pull it out. There are some hoses going down the side of the opening. Mine is snug ,but comes out okay. I undo it ,drop it down , it sits in there, I screw the cap on, and just tip it sideways, and pull it out. Putting it back in , I usually prefill about 3/4 full of oil, screw the cap on go in sideways. Tip it straight, then unscrew the cap, and put back in. It pretty much finds its way home, there is just not a lot of room up there to go anywhere other then where it belongs.

I have changed mine both ways, and I didn't like removing the turbo hose, and reaching down in there to get it undone, and replacing. Some say its easy, I didn't find it THAT easy. Thru the bottom it just easier to me. Some that claim its easy thru the top, but have never gone thru the fender. IMHO the oil ,and the fuel filter maintenance on these Cummins is a bit awkward at best.

Sounds like you got the right tools to do it thru the fender. There is a video on here by "Too Tall" that shows going thru the fender with the Genos tools. Good luck !!

I can see every step leading up to the filter sitting there and unscrewing the top to be not too hard as long as the opening allows the previous steps. The part that I have not SEEN or mentally doing is raising the filter with one hand and screwing it in place. Just seems VERY awkward to me. Every video I have seen seems to skip over actually showing that step.

It's funny how some trucks are a real pita to change through the fender well....my 2014 was easy but my buddies 2015 with the Aisin is a bear and we have to pull the turbo hose vs bending all those metal lines inboard of the wheel well. The turbo hose is easy for a guy with a long screwdriver and spring clamp pliers.:-laf

Tell your buddy to read my thread, "EASY! 2103 up oil change"

Now I am thinking the Aisin makes it more difficult. The cooler lines are on the passenger side for the 68RFE drivers side for the Aisin.

I too thought it awkward thru the fender, surprisingly it was not, and have said before its been six months, but don't remember it being bad at all. What stands out in my mind is going thru the top , and having that balancing act getting the filter started back on. I am changing mine in the next few days, will pay close attention to installing it. As far as removing its a no brainer with the cap.

Is that not the issue the cooler lines in the road on the 68RFE, and can be too close to remove the filter, but they are on the drivers side on the Aisin , and not an issue for the filter ????? Maybe I missed something

Cummins2014 does your truck have the Aisin?

Sorry ,didn't see your question until now, no 68RFE. Reason I asked about the lines in the above post being on the drivers side for the Aisin , and why the Aisin would be more difficult for the oil filter removal thru the fender

I miss spoke. Aisin is passenger side 68 has the lines on the drivers side.

I will post a pic of mine later. I am to assume the 68 gives more room thru the fender than the Aisin.

It isn't awkward at all, In fact, I thought it was easier than from the top. With the filter in the palm of your hand, you just raise it up and spin it with your fingers.....even with my old arthritic hands it's a piece of cake.:-laf

Interesting--I have the Aisin and changing the oil filter didn't give me any heartache with lines, etc. I did remove the front wheel though to make access easier.

Don't know what the lines are there, but there are some on my truck on the filter side. Never looked at an Aisin truck to know whats there.

68RFE and AS69RC alike.....the lines are still on the right side frame rail. Pictures below are from an AS69RC truck.

And why I don't go through the wheel well :

^^^^^^ OMG you are a top change guy???

Here is mine. I would worry about getting it in place, unscrewing the top and trying to get my hand under it and not have it fall over.

Thanks . I don't see much difference from your pictures ,and my truck with the 68 , the lines are not an issue with mine, although it is a snug fit coming out.
