Yes.....I have never changed it through the wheelwell. When there was lots of chatter over on another forum regarding this matter, I took pictures utilizing an old, drained filter when I took the pictures.

I'd have to believe threading the new filter on, giving the limited clearances on MY truck, would only add to the degree of difficulty involved.

I've never spilled a drop----and my filters are always primed when installed. No cap-off tool required. :-laf

Granted you have to buy a cap to make it easy, but not having done it thru the fender you will NEVER know :) It does make me wonder :) :rolleyes:

First couple times I also did it from above, but hey whatever floats your boat :D to each his own .

I agree with ya there......

In the process of trying to increase my knowledge of these trucks, coupled with the fact that I drive ALOT, I felt it necessary to do a couple of other inspections EVERY oil & oil filter change (keep in mind I'm on the 13.5k to 15.0k mileage intervals) :

1) Inspection of the air filter
2) Inspection of the turbo inlet for any excessive CCV oil residue

To hear others on various forums, I should have never gone 15k miles on oil changes; I should have never went 30k miles on air filters; and I should have performed a CCV delete in the parking lot when I left the dealer after purchasing.

In a nutshell.....removing the intake allowed me to perform various other inspections during routine oil changes.

I LIKE tools and have about every one needed to do most mechanical tasks but I have zero issues removing the intake as I posted a thread about. No spills and always have pre filled. I also like to give the turbo a look over.

And it goes on ,and on. Ya, nothing like taking a look at that turbo twice a year, gotta believe its a real must :rolleyes: but then we have to justify why we do what we do :confused: :-laf
 
I just take off the rt front tire makes dealing with the filter easier. Get it loose and run large ziplock bag over it . Works well. The real pain is that top fuel filter housing. What a pain to take the lid off, even when torqued to spec.
 
Heavy zip lock bag has ripped both times I've changed my oil when pulling it through fender. Pulling intake tube next time.

You may like it better going thru the top. If not get the cap from Genos ,it won't rip. :)

If you had an issue the first time you went thru the fender well ,why didn't you go thru the top on the second time :confused: Well it did take me twice taking the intake off to get cured ,and go thru the fender well :rolleyes:
 
I watched the vid showing the Geno's cap. He cut the vid when lowering the filter, WHY??? He did show raising and screwing the filter with one hand.

So my conclusion is I am sticking with the top method. MUCH easier to do and you don't need to be contortionist from the top. Really don't see a whole lot of time difference either.
 
Hey Too Tall.............one question. I did not see in the video where the filter base was wiped / cleaned. Is that a step you did, but did not record, or do you not clean the filter base??? I could see it being difficult cleaning the filter base utilizing the wheel well method.
 
Greg......and 12V.....:-laf there really is no conspiracy here to misinform you.....:) it won't spill unless you are a total klutz.....and even us "heathens of the fender" practice safe and hygienic ways and make sure the old gasket didn't stick to the filter base and......wipe the base clean.:cool:

Pretty sure I told you before, but maybe not, or you didn't believe me. Its not an issue . How do you do it from above, and then think it about it for a moment, its the same from below, you reach down, and I reach up :rolleyes:

I have no idea why you ,and Cummins even question which way we do it, you guys made it clear what way you do it, and will continue. My point has always been that I have done it thru the top removing the air intake, it sucks, you can minimize it all you want ,don't care. I prefer the fender well .

Apparently you have not removed the filter from the bottom, and don't intend to , why not just move on. You are not going to convince someone that has tried it both ways, and prefers thru the fender well .

There you go, so glad you have finally made a decision on which way to go , for awhile there I thought you were going to go to the dark side . :-laf

Just think if you tried it thru the fender well as some have after doing it the other way, and actually having to admit that you preferred the fender well after all this. :confused: You made a wise choice sticking to what YOU think is better :rolleyes:
