2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission What to use in transfer case 1999 4x4.

I remember it took about 3 gts. The hardest part was taking the brace / guard down to access it. I think I used atf + 3 last time but it's been a long time ago. What should I use this time?? Thanks

One thing you might try, I found a piece of U shaped plastic that I wedge under the drain plug boss and use it like a funnel. Just drain into a pan. No need to take off the skid plate. A piece of PVC cut out on one end to fit under the drain plug should work. I also use ATF+4.

Why don't we just shut down the forum and Google everything...

I'm too lazy to drop the skid plate. I just let it drain on the plate and catch it where it pours off. Then hit it with brake clean. Any ATF+4 works. I don't know about the #6 you mention.

Type 6 is what my GM's use.

I would stick with the ATF+4 in that RAM.

Atf+4 has better viscosity at low temp and is much longer lasting as well as better at high temps

I understood ATF+4 has friction modifiers which the "shift on the fly" transfer cases do better with due to the synchro ring.

I could be wrong, but it us my understanding that the friction modifiers only help with the clutches. I have heard of people switching over to straight 30 weight oil, with success, in heavy dudy applications. I have never done it so I'm not suggesting it.
