Some like it, some hate it. I never said the system didn't work, but I object to the statement that it's just plain old common sense to like the system. That's as ridiculous as saying 3.42s are perfect for all SRWs. But hey, they work, right? It's really OK to take MFRs to task on some things. It won't hurt your "FanBoy-dom" and it may actually help to produce better vehicles in the future.

But apparently, there are thousands upon thousands of vandals out there itching to put contaminates into our tanks so we better fix that problem. And now, you have a system where a 60 year old farmer who's been fueling trucks for 45 years now needs a block of instruction to make sure they fuel their truck correctly lest they get covered in diesel.

I've had 2 Ram CTD's with the capless filler necks and double flaps. Both had the red factory plastic caps, and they work. Period!
But hey, I like a little bit of personalization, so I added these. Way cooler than any OEM filler caps on any make of pickup.

I had the same system on my 2010 F-150 for 130,000 miles without any problems and that truck doesn't even have a serviceable fuel filter!!!

Miles spent on a flatbed headed to the dealer for repairs don't count. :)

I prefer the old design with a cap. You know for sure that the tank is capped. If I was worried about vandals, I would install a locking fuel door, just like people have done for years. If I was putting additives in the fuel, I would really prefer the old design vs having to use and store a funnel to get past the second flap. I use a $2 rubber plumbing pipe cap from Home Depot.

Of all things to rant about as the reason to never buy a brand of vehicle, the fuel cap design rates pretty close to the bottom for me. Diesel engines that shudder and lose power during regen and have had this problem for seven model years in a row and require major engine work to fix (when it works), would be at or near the top of my list of reasons to avoid a specific brand (i.e., Ford Super Duty).

Hyperbole will get you nowhere. Have you ever fired a bad employee? Relationship gone bad? I know enough people who've had foreign substances in their tank to make it worthwhile. I happen to be a 60 year old ( almost) logger who's been filling equipment for 45 years. I didn't require retraining to fuel my truck.

We had to retrain Joe when he bought a newer double flap truck! :-laf:-laf:-laf

Hyperbole is excellent training method , Its something this Generation needs badly and is over looked, BC they have sensitive feeling's... I wish someone would use a Hyperbole on how bad you get sprayed (*&^) if that retail Nozzle is NOT passed the 2nd Gate.

Is splashing fuel on ones self while filling the tank really a thing?

I have never had that happen....even before I knew about the 2nd flapper.

You can literally put a water hose inside the first flap and turn it on without getting a drop inside the tank.

I call BS on that statement! A little spring loaded tin flap is not going to keep water from a hose out! If that was possible it would take a 100 pounds of force on the fuel nozzle to open the flap. SNOKING

All the talk I read about how hard it was to fuel up my 2014 Ram CTD , when it came time for the 1st fill up (after running the fuel from the dealer out) I pulled into the filling station and tried about 30 different ways to get the nozzle to work. No luck. A fella in a Ram CTD seen me wrestling around with the hose, nozzle, and pump itself and came over to give it try. He couldn't get it to work either. So I thought I had a defective truck. I was on my way to the dealership when I got a call from the fuel company (that I had called about this problem) , and he said the problem was with my fuel card. It had not been programmed to use on a diesel pump. Just gas.
Since June 2014 I haven't had a problem with the flaps or fueling. I'm not saying I've never wrestled with a big rig pump, cuz I have, but usually only a few seconds at the most.

If this double flap thingy is so foolproof...(so easy that even someone from Kentucky can do it.....:-laf)....why does Ram shove a plastic plug in the neck when they ship the truck....????....:-laf

Not sure I would test it to to see if it would hold water but the same design has been used on pressuized fuel tanks on cars for a few years. If they leak they trip DTC's

Because corporate bean counters are all the same. The engineers know as well as you and I that not all contamination is liquid. That's why most m of us use a cap? I simply dont understand folks who can't grasp the idea of full insertion.

I wash my truck in summer months with a diesel heated pressure washer. Every time I wash the truck I open the flap and give it a good rinse.
19,000 miles on the truck now and I bet I've done it 20 times without any water in the tank or filters.
if you want a cap have one. It is simply a lack of understanding on how the system works that makes you use one but if it makes you happy feel free!
i still like reading your posts, no hard feelings
Bruce

Further.....a cap isn't even necessary.....since the secondary "trap door" keeps everything clean.

Come on, they're not that stupid.

Really???? Then why do I have a fist full of recall notices??? Why did my truck come from the factory with the rear fuel filter heater disabled? Why do I need a new SCR? Leaving the fuel fill point open when it is so simple a problem to be fixed, from an engineering standpoint, does not really make sense. Hell our crankcase is better sealed than our fuel supply tank!

Fair enough, but I will not be grabbing my torch and pitchfork until a verifiable issue is found to be caused by these, by any of the manufacturers who are using them. I think if dirt and water was getting into the system, I think we'd hear about an issue by now.

Post #7 is an OEM RAM 1500 diesel vented cap with tether. The 2500 and 3500 have the hole in the door arm for the tether to attach. Mopar 82214609

This is the same cap I got for my 2014. Fits very well, price isn't bad and it's worth the piece of mind to have.
FWIW - I've read here, I think, that the fancy aluminum caps might look nice but are susceptible to corroding from the DEF so those are a no go for me.

Funny, I think it was one of your post Mr. SNOKING. :)

I didn't realize there was a blue aluminum def cap until I saw this. Now I got one on order.

3 pages and not one single person has mentioned how much crap you put inside your fuel fill neck just by sticking the nozzle in the hole. Ever take the time to notice just how filthy the nozzle is? We're contaminating our tanks just by sticking it in! :D
