Last week, I started my truck and noted a loud noise thta sounds like an big hole in the exhaust pipe at idle. When I looked the water pump was leaking.

Took it to my shop. Not a Dodge shop, byt have doing business with him for years.

He changed the water pump and the idler and put on a new Serp belt.

The noise is still there. It disappears as soon as I come off idle. Oil press ure is good PS reservoir is full. Truck seems to run normally, no power loss.

There is also a vibration associated with it.

Any ideas?

Thank you

Andy

I have not, but I will - Thank you

Since this occurred at the same time as the water pump failed (Leaking all over everything. It just seems like something up fromt must not have liked that.
Thank you, I will check it in the AM.

Andy

It mite be your exhaust manifold. I know the exhaust manifolds in the 12 valves were prone to cracking (shrinking) but I think so were the 24 valves. Don't know about 3rd gen and don't know if it would cause vibration.

Loud noise from Engine Compartment at idle

When I first bought my truck I heard a loud noise from the engine compartment at idle. I looked under the hood and found a Cummins diesel.

Okay, I will get serious - what kind of noise are you hearing? scraping, squealing, knocking, ticking, rumbling, etc...? Let us know what kind of sound and how loud it is as this will help us help you.

Hi everyone and thank you so much for your help. I will shoot and post a video tomorrow (with sound). In addition to everything else, I got a real bad cold and have been asleep most of the day.

Sounds to me like the FCA has gone full open at an idle and it is all combustion rattle, even off idle. Whatever it is it don't sound healthy at any rpm.

Fuel Control Actuator, it sounds really rattly to me but that could just be phone audio or the real symptom. It also sounds a lot like you may have a flex plate Tango Uniform. Pull the lower cover of the trans bell housing and see if the is FOD there. There is a LOT of scary noise there and hard to pin point with just the short video.

The diagnosis is in. The spring plate (flywheel) is broken. Parts are on order, hopefully started next Monday. I'm going for an upgraded springplate.

Thank you all for your help.

Anybody know of other manufacturer's have this problem as I have only seen/heard/read of this on Chrysler products. Of course I do not pay much attention to other manufacturers so maybe it is more common than I think.

It is LD parts behind an MD engine. Flex plate is not the only thing that suffers. That said, I have over 280k on a stock flex plate running a 400-425 HP tune and lots of heavy towing. Periodically doing locked shifts also which is REALLY bad for them. What I have seen, depends on the TC construction. A billet cover TC that has lots of contact with the flew plate will be stronger than the ones that only have minimal contact on pads.
