Case Number: S1125000002
Release Date: 10/10/2013
Symptom/Vehicle Issue:
Case Updated and Now Includes MY 2007 through 2014 Cummins Diesel. MIL P1451 and/or
P2463 and/or P242F. The Diesel Particulate Filter may have been replaced previously. Other DTC’s
may also be present (i.e.; O2, EGR and Turbo faults).
Discussion:
Replacing the DPF and not finding the “Root Cause” for excess soot load will result in a repeat failure.
Repeat MIL illumination due to DTC’s listed above may possibly be caused by fuel contamination
causing improper fuel control by the injectors resulting in excessive soot generation. Other systems
and components can cause excessive soot generation or DPF over-temp issues, including
Turbocharger, EGR Valve, and several engine system management sensors (i.e.; Mass Air Flow
(MAF), Crankcase Pressure Sensor (CPS) and Exhaust Pressure Sensor (EPS) to name a few).
DPF loading concerns may also be caused by the operator’s driving habits or “drive cycle”. Vehicles
used for short trip, light load and/or low speed operation may never have the opportunity to perform a
proper aftertreatment regeneration resulting in excess soot build up in the DPF. An example of this
drive cycle is called a “package and delivery” drive cycle, such as Postal or Parcel delivery
applications. Latest calibrations to the ECM/PCM and CCN allow communication to the operator
through the EVIC, a message when soot levels in the DPF require regeneration and instruct the driver
to drive the vehicle at elevated speeds in order to perform adequate aftertreatment regeneration.
Diagnostics on the 2007 and later, DPF equipped Cummins diesel have recently been updated and
include a “Symptom Based” procedure and an online worksheet to be completed on all drivability or
aftertreatment issues. For detailed instructions on this new process, see 6.7L CUMMINS TURBO
DIESEL COMMON DIAGNOSTIC PROCESS under “Announcements” on the front page of
TechCONNECT.
