It is the winter and cab heat would be nice, but with the truck fully warmed up no heat...sometimes, and sometimes it operates as normal

Somewhat exclusive of the cab heat problem is that it wants to turn on the cooling fan in traffic when it reaches 215 and the fan really roars at 225. I've seen it creep to 230. It is the winter with the latest round of fan B/S happened in ambient temps of 50 degrees. In the 42k miles of ownership I've not seen this type of coolant temp behavior even in the warmest of summer days.

Ideas?

Thanks in advance, Robert Patton

Just a couple random thoughts. Did you by chance ever feel your heater core hoses when you have a no heat condition? If it's cold then I'd say a flow issue but if it's hot then a blend motor/door.

If the 3.0 is anything like the 5.9-6.7 little to no heat most likely is low coolant level. Feeling the heater hoses is also a good suggestion as it determines engine coolant vs. HVAC box problem.

If you, find low coolant level and no leak found look at the egr cooler.I have to replace more than i would like

More details as I did not do any investigating last night, just parked the truck and logged-on for help and suggestions.

So, upon further review:
Coolant was low.
No milkshake in the oil
Max temp was 230 as verified with the Edge monitor that reads data from Ram (?) as it plugs into the OBD2 sensor. The hot/, over 220 temperatures were never longer than 30 seconds.o
Traces of coolant spray in back of the radiator, but it does not taste like coolant.

Bob, does the EGR cooler leak externally?
Further thoughts, the coolant is under more pressure than the exhaust, so the coolant goes into the egr cooler and "evaporates/cools" the air that is being fed into the engine?

Thanks to all for the responses. My apologies for the half-baked information.

The egr coolers leak internally into the egr system.Since you have stains pressure testing should be your next step-possible radiator, also not rare

Thanks, Bob. Will use the truck over the weekend and then schedule a trip to the dealer.

Don, thanks for prompting me to reply.
Here is the verdict:
No DTCs or trouble lights found. No pressure drops or leaks dripping. Inspected and found water pump and signs of slinging coolant. Replaced water pump and thermostat housing, o-rings and seals. Bled system, filled with coolant and test drove truck.
Without the Edge monitor /lack of cab heat/noise from cooling fan in the winter I would have been like many and driven around until something really was obvious and perhaps too "wrong."

A faulty thermostat makes sense, but I'm wondering what " found water pump and signs of slinging coolant" actually means.

Seems to me the water pump was leaking. Could that statement mean anything else? *My VM diesel in the wife's liberty was doing the same thing a while back.*

That's obvious. No wonder I didn't get it. The OP stated "No pressure drops or leaks dripping". That's what confused me.

I never saw any fluid leaks. I'm guessing close inspection by the mechanic uncovered the "slinging," or perhaps good use of the language to justify replacement of the water pump.
