Anyone have first hand experience with High Gear? Standard Trans is 360 miles away and HGT is only a few blocks detour off I-40 in Memphis when I visit my son in the Nashville, Tn area.

I've pulled the NV4500 from my 95 and am leaning toward taking it to Standard Trans since the work they did on it (full spline mainshaft and general freshing up) 13 years and 100,000 miles ago has been very satisfactory. Time however has taken its toll and a noise developed recently. But, HGT's location sure makes them tempting if their work/parts equals Standard Transmissions.

I would go with Standard.

I called HGT about 5 years ago about a transmission for a customer and they told me they use some used parts from transmission's they salvage on some rebuilds. They told me this because they said they did not have the parts needed for my NV5600 rebuild and said they would have to wait until they got a salvage transmission in. This may have changed since then but it sounded a bit shady to me.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the input. We're going through Memphis later today, but I think I'll "not" drop the transmission off. We do enjoy the occasional trip to Old Ft. Worth and Standard Transmission is only a few blocks away from the stockyards so it's not a bad thing to drop it off and wait a day for them to refresh things.

I build my own trans and I would use a a good used part before a china standard part any day
I haven't stayed in touch with the transmission work truck world of late, however Standard Transmission At one time was one of the better rebuilders. They were the first with a fully splined mainshaft to help with our 5th gear problems. Are they now using substandard parts?

No.

Mr Anderson just doesn't like them. He complains about them every chance he gets.

He also hasn't read the Quad 4X4 website very well. Many of their NV4500 parts are made in China too. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they get their parts from the same source. Made in China doesn't automatically mean low quality. My made in China lift pump (genuine Cummins) has about 340k miles on it and is functioning perfectly.

Yes I have read the page and sadly most of there parts are now China junk to

Well, I made an appointment to have the transmission at Standard Transmission on noon last Tuesday. Dropped it off, stayed at the Stockyards Motel that night with a great ribeye at the Cattleman's Steakhouse (also heard a lot of good music at the White Elephant across the street on open mike night). Next day after a leisurely start and good hotel breakfast we picked the transmission up at around 10:00.

Total cost for the full bearing kit with new synchros installed was $602 with a 12 month, 12,000 mile warranty.

I'm pretty OK with the whole deal.

BTW, front countershaft bearing race was galled. Timken USA made bearing, had about 100,000 miles on it.
