2004 Automatic transmission issues?

Just bought my first Cummins, 2004.5 3500 6 speed NV5600, SWR, bought with 225,166 miles. Now has 233,336 from me. Trucks in phenomenal condition, 1 owner, bone stock, great oil report, runs great. Since I bought it, I immediately changed the fuel filter with a Wix filter and have been trying different additives since I got it. I've tried Lucas, Diesel Kleen and Stanadyne and I only fill up at Love's with there No. 2 diesel. Just the other day I noticed a bunch of sweat on the lift pump and running down the hose at the bottom of the pump, also a little lower psi on the fuel gauge. I changed the filter with a Fleetguard from Cummins here in town and it immediately solved the problem. What might have caused this?

If you are running a cleaner like Diesel Kleen you probably clean out the tank and fuel system plugging the filter. You don't want to run too much cleaner thru the system, rather do it periodically and run a fuel supplement the rest of the time. You are probably just cleaning out the accumulated junk from the PO and some 13 years of fuel deposits.

The filter mounted pump is a huge weak spot, the fact it is still working is amazing and might be part of the problem, it is loosing its ability to push fuel unless the filter is perfect. I don't think the WIX filter is rated as good as the Fleetguard or Donaldson replacements, a little restriction and the LP starts leaking and losing pressure is a good indication it is suspect.

The factory fix was to install the pump in the tank. Check for your year, there is probably a kit. I agree also on not running the fuel system cleaners every tank.

Don't go with the intank pump . You have the option of installing a nice aftermarket lift pump. Check into one of the Holleys or fuelab has a brushless pump.

Every one told me i had to get a FASS, Airdog, Fuellab, and to never use the in tank pumps. well 230K later the in tank pump is still working flawlessly, and i've seen report after report of the FASS and Airdog pumps going bad, and people having to wait around for them to ship another pump, where as if they had used an in tank pump, just about all local parts houses have them on the shelf.
90% of vehicles on the road today use an in tank pump. they work. don't be scared to use one.

That's why my recommendation was the brushless. as FASS made their's maintenance free by not having access tto the brushes. Yes I have had good luck with the intank but pushing through a 2 micron puts a lot of stress on it.

So much misleading info on Pumps, The in tank pump will out live any after market Pump, You need not worry about pushing thru filters, Most spin-on labels are very deceiving, The Gear pump on the CP3 that's used on all Ram/Dodge Cummins diesel produces 25HG (OEM) modded correctly it will produce 32HG and double its volume, All you need is a lift system to prime the CP3/GP that's it, I've cut open those so-called 2mic filters just to find them collapsed allowing contaminates to bypass the media. MY 2003 still has the 2 mounted Pumps I installed in 2005, Also you can replace the canister pump in 30 Minutes in a parking lot if necessary. The only reason to install Fass/Airdog is for more volume that's it , and if you live in cold -0 temps and get some untreated clear #2 in -0 temps you will hate those systems..Many different ways to increase filtration , but the only 1 that will stop contamination is bypass and or Auxiliary systems.

Ceb, question for you. I use stanodyne with every fillup. Do you recommend or not recommend using diesel kleen periodically ?
Thanks

A month after I replaced the filter mounted LP Dodge came out with the in-tank kits. While the brushless (yes, it really is) Fass pump I used is nearly bullet proof, it's somewhat noisy even with the noise elimination kit they gave me.
I wish I had known about the in-tank kit and used it instead.

Periodically with a cleaner. In the CR fuel systems as least one tank per month to stop the build up.
