I went back and reread this thread. I made a statement on the post with the overhead pic and I typed "transmission wanted to dnshift from 6th gears. That was incorrect. Spell check must have changed some words. Just the opposite. The transmission did a great job staying in high gear. I am running the Smarty on 90hp, #4 on tq and #4 on timing. Had plenty power.

That's what I presumed you meant.

As far as your Smarty on TQ4... I don't have the older manuals but isn't that wild tq?

If it is then it's really not good for a towing trans, even a built one. If you want I could go into the whole progrmaging side of it, but basically with the TQ on wild the trans doesn't see the TPS for higher power and doesn't adjust the pressure in the trans to hold it. Long story short is the engine is in a higher torque profile than the trans is expecting. This is okay for street use on a built trans, but certainly shouldn't ever be used towing a heavy trailer. Over time it will have a noticeable effect on trans life.

Yes #4 is wide. I never drive and tow heavy footed. The transmission is rated at 650HP. Before I tow heavy on a trip I will tone down my settings a bit. I never put the pedal to the metal even running mty.

The way the trans works it will have more holding power with a heavy foot. A light foot with a wild TQ setting is what is hard on the trans as the torque production is high but the trans holding power is lower.

You want to have to use your foot for a towing tune as the TPS is what tells the trans to increase pressure and holding.

I ran back thru the programming on the Smarty today. I have TQ on #3.

Well our fall RV trip to the NC outer banks came around today. We hooked up to the Champagne and took off. WOW... The 4.30 gears with the 19.5s are great. Between Charlotte area and Rodanthe, Outerbanks the transmission not one time wanted to down shift into 5th gear. Running at 55mph and 2000rpm and 70mph and 2000rpm is at a perfect power range. My overhead pretty well stayed at 12.5mpg. My overhead is 1mph fast. The best thing about this change to 4.30s is what it has done to my EGTs. Running the Smarty on 90HP, TQ3, fuel#1, Timing#4 the EGTs did not hardly get over 1100 degrees. Running in the BlueRidge may tell a different story.
