I'm fairly certain that the % life remaining is simply a countdown to 15,000 miles, which is the recommended filter change interval. For $100 or less, it is CHEAP insurance to keep your fuel system clean. Our fuel injectors are an older and more durable design than Ford and GM, butyou still don't want dirty fuel messing up your engine.

Ideally, the oil minder/reminder should count 100 idle hours as 3000 miles. But I think it doesn't

NO WAY JOSE! I'm at 31 Idle hours and 15,000+ miles. I would guess it counts down % as my milage goes up so that 0% and 15,000 miles intersect no matter the loads I pull, altitudes I drive, hours I sit on the freeway or summer/winter blends of fuel I burn... another idiot light.

Oil change is more than mileage. 15K , 6 months or 500 hours, which ever comes first.

Chris

This may be true now. But they never had the 500 hours in the manual for the 2013's. And in 6 months, I still have 50-60% on the mindef.

I think they did not program the 500 hours or 6 months into mine

Not true, here is info from the 2013 diesel supplement. EVIC oil minder is 15K or 500 hours. Also the first note is:
• Under no circumstances should oil change intervals
exceed 15,000 miles (24,000 km) or six months or
500 Hours, whichever comes first.

Here is the whole section:

Oil Change Indicator System – Cummins® Diesel
Your vehicle is equipped with an engine oil change
indicator system. This system will alert you when it is
time to change your engine oil by displaying the words
“Oil Change Due” on your Electronic Vehicle Information
Center (EVIC). The oil change reminder will remind
the owner to change the engine oil every 15,000 miles or
500 hours, whichever comes first, except for the Chassis
Cab models that are using B20 biodiesel, which are 12,500
miles or 400 hours, whichever comes first. Failure to
change the engine oil per the maintenance schedule can
result in internal engine damage.
For information on resetting the Oil Change Indicator
message, refer to “Oil Change Due” under “Electronic
Vehicle Information Center (EVIC)/EVIC Warning
Lights” in “Understanding Your Instrument Panel” for
further information.
Replace the engine oil and oil filter every 15,000 miles
(24 000 km) or six months, or sooner if prompted by
the oil change indicator system. Under no circumstances
should oil change intervals exceed 15,000 miles
(24 000 km) or six months, whichever comes first.

NOTE:
• Under no circumstances should oil change intervals
exceed 15,000 miles (24,000 km) or six months or
500 Hours, whichever comes first.
• Replace the engine oil and oil filter every 12,500 miles
(20 000 km) when running B20 fuel (Chassis Cab Only).
If Chassis Cab models are operated with greater than 5%
levels of Biodiesel, the oil change interval must not
exceed 12,500 miles (20 000 km) under any circumstances.
See the Fuel Requirements section for more information
regarding operation of Chassis Cab models configured
for use with Biodiesel blend(B6-B20) fuel meeting ASTM
specification D-7467.

The oil change intervals don't make sense to me. I know of one particular new 2016 (which I tried to buy) that sat at the dealership for over 1 year. I guarantee the oil was not changed twice by the dealer in that time frame!

I agree that 6 months is ridiculous for many low mileage users. My solution was to drive the new RAM more miles than I have any vehicle in years. SnoKing

Yeah, they changed the online version. But the 500 hours was not in the printed one that was printed in 2013. I don't have my 2013 manual with me. But I have posted a picture of it in a previous post.

And the EVIC doesn't seem to have been fixed with any updates or flashes. My fuel filter minder has the original flawed programming that makes it count faster than the oil filter minder. The fuel filter minder says 0% at between 11,000 & 12,000 miles. (Is my fuel filter minder counting down 15,000 km?)
And there is apparently no consideration of how many months old the oil is (from my experience)

Here is the picture of the manual that I posted about a year and a half ago.

it seems they can update/edit the online manual and not change the copyright date? Probably as long as they change less than 5%, they can edit errors and omissions?

They did not send me an updated manual, they have my address, so I'm keeping and referring to my manual

I believe the issue most have in the short 6 months that is also in your manual. I do not care at the 500 hours. I would never hit that.

BTW, how was you journey out of Florida? Where are you now? SnoKing

Thanks for asking.

Having a CTD has been a godsend. There are gasoline shortages throughout the entire southeast of the US because of both Harvey shutting down refineries and the high demand for gasoline to run household generators and cars. So far there has been plenty of availability of diesel. And a 2 hour wait for gasoline is nonexistent at the stations that have designated diesel islands and truck stops.

It took us 20+ hours to drive a route that under normal conditions would take 10-11 hours. The Florida turnpike was clogged mostly at interstate service centers where there were long lines of cars waiting on the interstate and blocking traffic trying to exit to fuel up. We got stuck in the stalled traffic, but our tank never got lower than half full. And we never stopped to fuel until after we got to our reserved hotel. The first day, we hoped to get from Miami to Gainesville. But after 9 hours of driving, we had to stop at Kissimmee, FL. We were lucky to be able to change our reservation a few hours prior to getting to Kissimmee. That first day of driving had the most slow downs where we were crawling at 10-30 mph much of the way.

We are not rushing back. We saw this video posted by our neighbor (who is the heir to the Dutch Dekuyper alcohol distillery and distributor & currently running his family's company). You've probably seen their schnapps and other flavored alcoholic drinks in the liqour stores?

We are waiting until they clear the streets before we hear back.

Edit: They might run out of clean water, but probably won't run out of fruity drinks! :-laf

On my truck (2013) the filter and oil change countdowns are on mileage only. The maintenance schedule also has a time limit, six months, I think, without looking. If you are concerned about preserving warranty, check your maintenance schedule. The engineer in me has me creating a spreadsheet to keep track.

Edit: Oil change at 6 months, fuel filter at 12.

Hey, there is some info that is contradictory. Image is from my user guide and is the same in the 5th supplement diesel owners manual. Calls for oil change every 7,500 miles. I just last week picked up our 3500 2017 Ram Limited. Just over 1,100 miles on it today.

Eco Diesel are not Cummins as noted.

My 2015 diesel supplement is the same. If you look at the second line of the chart, it is in 6 month intervals. Then they are the note that if you go 500 hours or 15K before you reach 6 months you need to change the oil.
