New to me 2016 Ram

Posted this in another forum and wanted to share my thoughts and get your opinions.


"6000K in my 2016 Ram 3500
Finally grabbed one. Used with 24K on it. Honestly coming from my 2002 Powerstroke I feel pampered. Truck is great. Comfortable. Fuel mileage is crazy. Worse tank hand calculated is 20.9 mpg. Honestly the truck is ford the Bill for the current situation. Now a few questions.

1: does the fuel filter typically need to be changed the same time as the oil filter? Sash read our puts the within 1% of each other.

2: While extremely comfortable I would have preferred the bench seat with cold down arm rest. How come this damn ram rest squeasqueaks? I still have the 2002 Powerstroke with captains chairs and Center console. 300K. No squeaky console. Everything else does though.

3: Can we find the engineer who signed off on the 68rfe? For a vehicle that cost this much it's the only buzz kill for me. Very frustrating. I have an extended warranty to 125K but other than an aftermarket granny what can be done? Tune? Torque converter? Valve body? Do I really have to do all to make it survive?

It short shifts. As I'm sure you're all aware. 1st to 2nd is a positive shift. 2-3-4 It just gurggles it way as it slips the converter. 5th hear @ 35mph? Are you kidding me? I can manual shift It to my liking but that button does not shift immediately. Looking for some insight from those who have remedied this.

It really is a great truck. transmission's a low point. This is my 1st "Chrysler" product since my 87 Ramcharger. Thanks for the help in advance guys.

Congrats on your new truck.

#1 Fuel filters are every 15K miles. Oil is 15K miles or 6 months, whichever comes first.

#2 Can't help you there, I've got the bench seat.

#3 The transmission feels a little loose when you are driving empty. This truck was designed to WORK, not to drive around empty. Put some weight in the bed or a trailer behind you and that transmission will feel rock solid, I promise you. Something else to consider is that this is a "learning transmission", so the way you drive will effect how it feels. I drive 100% of the time in Tow/haul and with exhaust brake on. The transmission was programmed for best fuel mileage when empty, which is why it shifts so quickly. If you put it in Tow/haul mode, it will think its working and hold gears longer. That will make the transmission feel a lot more solid when driving empty. Your other option is to get a tuner for the trans and kill your warranty for the transmission. I've put about 26K miles on my truck and it drives great now. I bought it used and it felt goofy for the first couple months before it "learned" my driving style.

The shifting throw me off. Do I have to take it to a dealer to allow the transmission to relearn or can my mechanic do so? My though is who knows how the previous owner drove it let's start fresh?

Try using tow/haul all the time and see if it is better.

There may be some software updates the dealer can perform under warranty.As long as your Powertrain coverage is still in effect I understand there are some aftermarket scanners that can perform the quick learn procedures but if you go to the dealer they can also do the updates that the aftermarket will not have access to.If there is an update the quick learn will be included

I will have to swing by to see what's whats.

put a little duct tape inside the opening where the latch holds the top down. That will stop the squeak. There is an old thread around here somewhere.

my 2011 had it, tape fixed it.

I change oil, air and fuel filters ALL at 15K.

Run your truck with TH and EB "ON" all the time!!!
