Ok yesterday things got weird, got a "16" 2500 6.7L, short version, I used the manual shift button &a for unknown reasons the trans was stuck in 4th gear from a dead stop it wouldn't down shift to 1st gear even when I used button shift :confused:. Nada happened except check eng idiot light came on about same time it wouldn't shift either automaticly or using button. It eventually started to shift again only after stopping 3 times put in park & back to drive 3-4 times. I took out my utv to think about the situation & have fun. Started truck this morning using auto start, it ran about 1min then heard it shut down, went out to check out what's going on. Dash says auto start needs resetting? Not knowing wtf was going on I used fob to start truck things looked ok except check eng symbol still on. Had drive it and got about 3 miles & I noticed a funky smell in cab almost like incomplete diesel fuel consumption? My code reader is 900 miles away :(
Any thoughts? Yes I got the water pump recall also and as everyone else knows the parts aren't available

Funky smell

I cannot speak to the rest of the post, but the incomplete diesel smell I can. I have a 2017 RAM 5500 6.7 turbo 4x4. Mechanic replaced the crank case filter, $150 for the part. He also found the fuel control valve leaking, which was replaced under warranty. This fixed the problem, so far. Fixrd in October, 2017

I had a 2014 3500 4x4 6.7 turbo that also had the fuel control valve replaced, however in that case the engine would not get enough fuel under a load, like an overpass to maintain highway speed. I was pulling a 16,000 lb. 5th wheel at that time.
 
Auto start usually wont work when the check engine light is on. Get that checked out asap. As far as the smell, your truck was probably in a regen. Did it smell more like lighter fluid than diesel? Thats what my truck was doing before this latest flash it received.

There is a new RRT for some 16's....I'll look it up and post it later.

***RRT is 16-041 and it fixes a bunch of stuff. I wanted if for improved (read reduced)engine hesitation, improve run quality during regen/reduce noise and shift improvements for 68RFE transmission. It did all of that and then some.*** Tell your dealer to check your truck for applicability and if it falls into the affected range, they'll flash it. It made a world of difference for my trucks operation.

I’m gonna call a dealership today & hopefully get in soon. Yes the funky Oder was more like lighter fluid, I was wondering if it was doing a regen but really had no idea just an uneducated guess. Thx & Will post outcome-
 
Well went to dealership today & turns out to be a bad selinoid on transmission which causes eng malfunction light and as fate would have it they didn’t have the part & have to order it. Soooo it’s another trip to get it fixed. As for funky smell you were correct on the regen. Thanks for all the help!
 
Was there a software update available?
I mentioned it to the service Mngr, he wrote it down and tell ya the truth I didn't check after that & he never mentioned it when he told me about selenoid. So I'm guessing no. I'll ask again when I go back for the new selenoid.
 
Ok here's some nice to know info regarding my check eng light, the DTC it threw was P 0765 which led to a service bulletin 21-004-17 which is replace the solenoid pack. Could explain why it wouldn't shift out of 4th gear, service Mngr said the tech cleaned the contacts & things seem ok & by the way we don't have the parts we gotta order them soooo come back when we get them:mad: kind of like the water pump recall - your trucks recalled but we don't have the parts. My faith in dodge is waning!
 
FCA sure doesn’t believe in inventory on hand. Modern thinking about inventory is called “Just in time inventory”. Never have any extra cause it costs money.
