It is too cold and snow is flying so i'm not going out to get my manual. My engine brake dash light is amber most of the time but I think if I hit the eb switch twice it goes to green. What is the difference?

Hi Mark,
my understanding is that the Orange engine brake will apply full braking capability. The green is auto engine brake and will vary the amount of engine braking to maintain your current speed. I find it works well in tow haul mode. Towing our 3.5 tonne caravan down a long steep grade, it held the top of the hill speed using the engine brake and downshifting.
Enjoy the snow, we are expecting 38 deuCe today (100f) and warmer next week!

Regards from Australia
Trevor

Amber is full time braking. When you let off the accelerator the EB kicks in to reduce speed. This is like a conventional brake function.

Green is Auto mode. It’ll modulate the EB to maintain your speed on a Hill. And it’ll also engage fully when you apply the service brakes to slow the truck down.

My tradesman doesn't have the green light. But it does indicate auto mode for a second or 2 if I hit the button twice.

Clarification: My 2013 tradesman indicator light stays Amber in both modes.

Thanks for the answer. Once the roads dry up i'll try the different modes. I generally run it in amber mode. When I was driving big trucks cross country, they have 2 cyl, 4 cyl and 6 cyl braking. Always left it on max unless it was raining or snowing.

Good explanation for the latest trucks, and how my 2017 tradesmen works. My 2014 only has the amber light... wrote about the differences in my recent TDR column.

Has the indicator light for cruise control (on vs set) got more distinguishable in recent years. Seems like they could have something a little bigger than that tiny arrow that shows up on the speedometer icon???
