how long will a 68RFE last

freind of mine uses this truck commercially. its a 2014 with 370,000 miles on it. old 68RFE finally gave up the ghost.

he towed it home with his standby semi retired truck. 2010 F350.

"Just thought I'd post that my 2012 has 612k miles on it. Just replaced original 68RFE transmission with a mopar reman today. I hall cars (25k lbs combined) all day everyday for last 3 years. The truck has been awesome. No one believes I have original engine, turbo, etc. I'd hoped to get more out of transmission, but I'm told 600k is 3 times longer than it should last so $4000 installed is not bad I reckon. Of course it's had bearings, seals, ball joints, ujoints, and all of that a few times and the typical batteries, alternators, water pumps etc..., but it still surprises people that the engine and transmission have held up. Curious what y'alls experience has been. 3.73 gears and 4WD towing about 15k daily. Truck has auxiliary fuel, flat work bed with tool boxes, airbags so it weighs about 10k fully fueled.
All of the interior and electrical has held up well. Not your grand dads dodge. Anyway, your thoughts

The 68RFE is a much maligned transmission. 370K in commercial use is admirable indeed!!!!

I'm not surprised by that service at all. I've said for years that the Dodge/Ram automatics have gotten a bad rap, maybe well deserved at one point, but have greatly improved over the years. Heck, our 04.5 has over 350K on the original 48re with nothing more than routine maintenance. If we can get that mileage out of an old design 48 in a truck that plows snow all the time, that kind of return out of a 68rfe shouldn't come as a surprise.

I remember some years ago everyone told us that the 68RFE is Crap and wont last.

Here is my 11 68RFE 65k on clock and at least 55K on the AMZ/OIL Universal Synthetic ATF. I ran the hell out of it for the first thousand or so miles and always used TH and EB. It performed great.

So why did you go to an aisin? Just curious.

FWIW Mopar ATF+4 is a synthetic transmission fluid

Your Ford needs a sign on the side that says:

"While my Ford performed admirably, I am much happier with its replacement, a Ram Truck which went 370,000 on its original transmission and is only being towed because it deservedly needs a rebuild at this point." Or words to that effect. The Ford has big square sides. It might fit on there...

funny you mentioned it, but he traded the Ford today for a 2008 Ram 3500.

So why did you go to an aisin? Just curious.

Although I tow with a 68, from what I read the Aisin gets a heavy load moving much better with the gearing in first, and second gear. There are some on here ,that can explain it better.

Thats pretty impressive. The miles I use mine per year, I have 64 years left before I need to worry about my 68RFE
