on an engine equipped with a flat tappet cam that runs with some valve lash, can anyone explain how a change of the brand of oil would cause valve train noise?

its not like it has hydraulic lifters which operate at zero lash which are sensitive to oil pressure..

I will give it a shot:)

Every once in a while, as a mechanic you will run into an issue that you can't explain. However, it is usually a misdiagnosis, jumping to conclusions, coincidence, just flat out not thinking or in my case you get older and that explains a lot:D The circle is unbroken, you start out in the trade as a young no nothing, to your prime and rarely screw up to aging and start all over.

Maybe a Delo employee was disgruntled and added a cup of silica sand in one of the jugs.....

Sometimes a mechanical noise can be hard to track down and can sound like anything from anywhere.

I'd agree the noise could come from somewhere else, whether it was actually the oil that caused it would be harder to quantify... but one thing for sure is the brand of oil shouldn't have anything to do with clattering valves on a Cummins engine.. at least not in the short term. LOL

I've been using Lucas CI-4 oil in my 12 Valve for years (Currently at 470,000). The newer oils don't have the correct cleaning additives that the old engines need. I get mine at O'Reilly's.

Mike

P.S. I wish my hearing was good enough to hear all the noises that these other folks do!
