Oh, almost forgot...
About the trackers. Tracking blockers are a little misleading because they want to show how good a job they do, so they fudge the numbers a bit.
Here's what TDR uses:
- Google Analytics - this basically shows us traffic trends. It does not personally identify users to us.
- Google Adsense - this displays banner ads on the site. They track to prevent click fraud, prevent the same ad from showing too many times to the same user, etc. If Google Adsense hands off the ad to another ad network, that network might set a cookie as well.
- Sovrn - when Google doesn't have an ad to serve, Sovrn sends a backup ad. They track for the same reasons as Google Adsense
- Viglink - creates affiliate links. They also track for the same reasons as Google Adsense.
- DoubleClick for Publishers - TDR's direct sponsors like Pacbrake, we use this software to display their ads. DoubleClick tracks to know which ad you've seen, so it can serve the next ad in the rotation. It has the ability to track by location to serve different ads to different parts of the world, but we don't use this feature. We don't see any personal data in DoubleClick.
All of these may set multiple cookies (basically an id number) on your browser. Anti-tracking software counts each of these cookies as a separate tracker, even though they aren't. So for instance, if Google Analytics sets 4 cookies it gets shown as 4 trackers when it's really one.
TDR also maintains IP logs of user browsing activity (pretty much all web servers do), and these are rotated out every 3 months. We keep these logs in the 3-month rotation in case we have an illegal activity to deal with, determined spammer IP addresses we need to block, etc. It's extremely rare to have to use these logs (I can't tell you the last time I looked at them!).
