Did You Know Ram had a Diesel Engine 11 Years Prior to Cummins (89)?

I was in desperate need of another truck. Originally, I was going to replace our plow truck. But life gets in the way sometimes. So, I picked this up this morning as an addition to our other trucks. 2018 F150 Crew Cab XLT 3.5L Ecoboost 4x4 with the Max Tow and Sport packages. This was really a tough decision. The new 2019 Rams are very nice but the deals just aren't there yet. This is truly intended to be a short term purchase. So, I went for lots of bells and whistles hoping not to own this thing out of warranty.

I hope I'm still welcome here even if I do have a Ford in the driveway beside my Rams.......LOL

I wish I coulda broke your nuts. At least you’d have a coyote under the hood. I really fear that eco boost and not because it’s quick. Good luck with it sometimes you gotta do what you must.

I understand completely about the Ecoboost. Believe me when I tell you that this truck we be gone before the factory warranty expires. It is truly intended to be temporary. I'm not even going to have it undercoated.

I was able to get this in an extremely good deal. I'll PM you the details tonight.

Sinners are always welcome, especially if they eventually truly repent. Even if they sell all of their Dodges and buy Fords, Chevies, and GMs. They will, of course, receive extra doses of proselytizing whilst we pray they return to the fold. Even body shop owners have been known to repaint and thin no more.

LOL. Thanks Neal. I promise not to stray too far and to go to confession often to get this sin off of my soul.

Drive it like you stole it!

I'd be interested in your opinion when you hook a load to that engine. A couple of co workers own them and give them nothing but praise. But they are both ford fan boys in the purest form...

I'll certainly let you know. It will go to work next week and I'll be pulling the camper with it in a couple of weekends. I'm going in with an open mind. First Ford ever new or used so this should be an adventure.

OK, first feedback. I'm not sure how I feel about the auto start/stop feature this truck has. It is almost seamless, you do slightly feel it shut off and then come back on. I wonder what the effects of that fast shutdown will be on this engine long term? It can be disabled easily by pushing the dash button or by switching to tow/haul or sport mode.

That would drive me nuts, I would have to disable it.

I have a pretty hard time feeling the 5.3L GM engines shift back and forth from 8 cyl mode to 4 cyl mode...

I did turn it off on the way home tonight. I'm not sure if it is just that I'm just not used to it, or if it is really just that annoying.

On a positive, the ride/drive is absolutely amazing. I don't deserve to drive something this nice.

Auto stop/ start is a deal breaker for me. I’m sitting at a light and the car next to me cranks over and moves.
I would have to hit that button every time. My Hemi has cylinder kill, and on the highway, the only way of knowing where it’s at is to look at the short fuel average. Around town however, it sounds weird, drones and can get quite rough. I guess the R/T exhaust gives it up.
I have read disclaimers in owners manuals and online, that the manufacturers (BMW included) state that there are liabilities and accelerated component wear when using auto stop/ start.

Unfortunately , all manufacturers are doing it now. It's standard on all Dodge and Ram trucks/SUVs. Not sure about all Jeep models but my mother owns a 14 Renegade which has it also.

I'm starting to like the feel of this little turbo 6. It has a very strong low end feel and doesn't drop down a bunch of gears or have to wind itself to the redline in order to accelerate.

The transmission is very smooth on the upshift but a little clunky on the downshift. I've read somewhere that it will skip gears according to the load conditions so it may be jumping from 10th to 6th on one shift. I'm thinking that is what I am feeling. I haven't had the chance to try the tow haul mode or sport mode yet but I imagine that they will change that feel.

Oh, and one more thought. This truck is definitely big person friendly. Very easy in and out for someone my size. Even the buttons and controls work well and are within easy reach for a bigger person.

I've always been comfortable in a Ram cab, but as I mentioned in the thread I started on that rental Silverado we have, it is very tight. Now, please take in to account that it is a double cab instead of a full crew cab, but it doesn't even compare to the space that our 3rd gen Ram Quad Cabs have.

Have the 2010 Ram running again. Here it is parked nose to nose with the new Ford.

The wife tells me that I have no imagination when it comes to my choice in trucks.

So, are we having any nagging little evil thoughts about keeping the Ford long term over one of the (aging) gen 3's?

As a long time hold out of a gen 2 I can't say I'd blame you for thinking...

If all goes as planned, I am going to keep the Ford, the 2010 Ram 1/2 ton, and the 07 5.9.

I'm not rushing in to a decision though. Still planning to start flipping every 2-3 years for the one that I use all the time.

First fill up on the new Ford. 18.2 mpg, mixed driving rural roads, some highway, some 4x4 slow speed operation. Dash display was showing 18.6.
