good transmission when used within its design capabilities and intended weight ratings... as with anything else if you make it do what it wasn't designed to do, all bets are off.

If you keep the hp/torque stock, there really is nothing wrong with the Aisin. I'd imagine even if you add a little bit of, power, the Aisin should be robust enough to handle it.

If you tune the truck for major hp, yes the Aisin, and or the 6.7l, may in fact fail without additional modification....but that holds true for the other two HD diesels/transmission combinations.

Also, something Revmax hasn't acknowledged yet: the Aisin can be rebuilt and reinforced, but no one has figured out a way to tune it yet. So building an Aisin for high hp is a moot point anyways.

Do some research before you buy into aftermarket marketing...and with 900lb-ft in stock form, I don't know why HD truck owners feel the need to chase yet higher hp/torque figures.

You can minimize the lag with the BD throttle box and leaving it in tow/haul mode. For fuel mpg, it upshifts as soon as practical, and only downdhifts when needed, especially in normal mode. It takes time for the computer to recognize your "request" for power via the accelerator pedal, to downsift the trans, to build power while keeping emissions low and spooling up the turbo.
As for what trans is junk, a first-glance approach is to look at what they weigh: Ford and Chevy/Allison, about 330 lb. 68RFE, 265 lb. Aisin 69, 425 lb. Where's the beef?

I don't think weight necessarily equates to better build quality. But by many accounts, the Aisin transmission is a true medium-duty unit that is well-suited to the HO 6.7l Cummins. Aisin, as others have noted, is a well-known global transmission maker.

With that said, Ford's new TorqShift and GM's new version of the Allison are well sorted too. I think all 3 companies have recognized the importance of putting a decent transmission behind their diesel engines.

If people are hell-bent on tuning these engines for massive horsepower, I guess reinforcing the transmissions makes sense (or at least there is an argument to be made). If you're leaving everything fairly stock, these transmissions are robust...no need to fiddle with them.

Randy of Randys transmissions has put some Aisin trannys through serious abuse with great results and is currently working on building and programming them for performance use, pretty interesting to follow!

I agree Ford has a good trans but the Allison is at it's design limits. Wonder why their "SAE" tow ratings are so low with so much HP and TQ???

So I just ordered a 4500 with the Asin. The cab/chassis trucks are detuned. If I were to put a tuner on it to bring it up to the power the 2500/3500 pickups have, it should be fine, correct?

I'd be careful about that.

You would likely be voiding your warranty.

At least give it a fair amount of seat time (after it arrives) before you jump to conclusions that it NEEDS more power.
Just today I towed a gooseneck stack of trailers to Mt. Orab, OH.....trailers weighed in at 18,540 lbs....total GCW was about 29,540 lbs.

That 4500 just looks tough, lol I saw a Gator trailer like the bottom one go through town yesterday behind a black 4 door dually. They are somewhat rare this far west.

Here is a REAL load! Almost 60K AISIN trouble free miles about 1/2 towing. GS needs a 4500 to do the same.

No, I don’t need a 4500 to do the same. I bought the 4500 as the 3500 was depreciated out and I figured I’d try something different.

Since we’re now ******* and moaning, my front axle is rated at 7,000 lbs and my rear axle is rated at 12,000 lbs. GVWR is 16,500

What’s your truck numbers again?
